There is an electronic switch in there that when the brake pedal is depressed, that switch lets you go from park to any other gears.

Probably sensors! I have already replaced the crankshaft positioning sensor once, nissan replaced it once under recall and now it is bad again! Plus my speed sensor is bad too! Go to any part store and get diagnostic test ran, it will tell what sensors are bad.

2001 Nissan Altima idling high in parking or neutral

I have the same problem with my harrier 3000cc car. We have changed the idling sensor, airflow sensor. air filter, we have had the throttle checked, spark plugs, wiring and nothing works. The smell you are getting could be from your gear box, have it checked out early and if the gear shift is noticeable then you will need a gearbox specialist to open it and change the clutch plates. Good luck.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima will not shift out of park.I have replaced the shifter assemble, brake lights do work,Need help

If the floor shift lever wont move out of park, there foot brake lock that prevents it from moving until you depress the brake pedal and pull it out of park. I think the release is vacuum operated so try depressing the brake pedal a few time while trying to release. TerBo

Nissan Altima 2006 automatic gear shift got stick in neurtral and won"t go into reverse or park can you help

This seems to be a common problem. Sometimes something like a pen or other items find their way to the shifter linkage and it can cause the linkage to bind preventing it going into park etc. Or you may have a bad shifter cable. Remove the housing around the shifter and see if anything did get in the way of the shifter. While the housing is of, move the selector up and down from park to drive. This will give you a better view of what is happening.

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2005-2006-nissan-altima-se-r-discussion/225903-shift-lock.html

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.
