Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

No heat on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee and overheating

Blew a radiator hose ,replaced it and put liquid glass stop leak in and the heater did not work and vehicle overheated. unfortunely im not sure if the stop leakcaused this problem but i think it did! like a big dummy while running it through the system i turned the defrost on for a 3 minutes which i think was a no no any solutions to the cause!

    water pump had unusual plastic fins had come loose an worn out. that was the real underlying problem with the circulation of the coolant . was discovered after the radiator and thermostat was replaced.VERY good mechanic and straight up buisness!HATFIELD AUTO good job!

Stop leak can cause the radiator ports to get clogged. But if your car isn't getting heat, it's probably your heater core. The heater core is usually burried in the firewall between the engine and where you or your passenger put your feet

did u properly bleed the air out of the cooling system? if u are not sure raise the front of the jeep as high as u can with a floor jack, fill the coolant recovery bottle all the way up with 50/50 coolant mix and run the engine until it gets hot, then shut it down and run cold water over the radiator core, this will cause the air to bleed out and the coolant in the recovery tank to be sucked in, watch the level in the recovery while u do this, don't let it run dry. If this doesn't cure the problem you have other problems like a poss blown head gasket.

Run engine normally while filling radiator. Leave heater on high heat. When engine temp reads normal, shut it off, wait about three minutes...re-start and complete filling.

Since you have already changed everything that you have, I can not think of anything new that might cause your Jeep to overheat. Are you going by the meter in your vehicle or doing separate temperature measurements? I had a defective temperature gauge that caused me to chase my tail till I did separate measurements.

Heater doesn't work, overheating engine, anti-freeze waisting fast??


The problem possibly could be due to a hole in the coolant system, i.e. a hole in a radiator hose or even the radiator. Loss of coolant will cause the heater to stop working and the engine to overheat. If it runs normally for a time, such as several days or a few weeks, and only after that time has passed the heater stops working and the engine starts overheating, then suspect a leak someplace. If it starts overheating after driving 5 to 10 minutes regardless of how recently antifreeze was added then, possibly the thermostat. It is staying stuck shut and preventing the hot coolant from leaving the engine and cooling in the radiator. The radiator overflow will probably have antifreeze pushing out the cover as a clue. However this can also be the result of a blown head gasket. As far as the fan, does the vehicle have an electric fan or is it driven directly by the drive belt. If it's electric, then warm it up to operating temp and open the hood and listen if the fan runs or not. It will start and stop depending on how warm the engine antifreeze is. If it does run, then the fan is fine, if not then the temp sensor that activates it is not working and needs to be replaced, or the plug into the fan may have become disconnected. If it's driven by the drive belt, then it should not be an issue unless the belt is broken, which would probably be affecting the power steering and alternator as well. If the vehicle has no power steering and the alternator light is on when running and it overheats, check to see if the drive belt is broken/missing. Check also to see if the water pump pulley is wobbly or loose. That would indicate a bad pump and would need to be replaced. Hopefully you just have a hole in a hose, and a simple hose replacement will fix it. incidentally, it's a good idea to replace both upper and lower radiator hoses at the same time, and the upper radiator hose is usually attached to the thermostat housing, so replace the thermostat at the same time too. replace the cap , its allowing the system to over pressurize, also, you could have an air bubble thats moving around in the system, always make sure that you fill the radiator to just cover the radiator fins inside, this allows a place for expansion to happen. what you need to do is BURP your system, leave the cap off and start the vehicle, ( before doing this step,, make sure that you've replaced the thermostat, spring towards the motor , it only works one way!! ) once you see the fluid inside the radiator moving, it means the thermostat has opened, and your fluid level should drop down, slowly add more until the fins are just covered, and wait for it to close and recycle one more time, refill again, that should purge the system of unwanted air,, replace the cap, and fill the over flow tank to the lower level line,, and you should be set

when replacing coolant, did you bleed the air from system! you can remove radiator or overflow cap when cold. start vehicle and let it run until thermostat opens,when all air is out hoses should get hot. but before starting, turn heater on to high setting, if you vehicle does not have a air bleeder on it. do as above. just be sure radiator is full of coolant. after hoses get hot, turn off heater, then put cap back on radiator or overflow. good-day! the first thing to do is to check for a stuck closed thermostat. do this first ok!

hi this is your heater matrix inside the car has blown or the hoses have split, unfortunately there is no quick fix for this as it is under the dash and takes allot of time to take it out and replace...hope this helps

1999 saturn sl1 wagon has overheating problem. Had a leak in the reservoir so I replaced that. During that time had added stop leak several times. Reservoir is now new, but still losing water at speeds...


If you cant see any water coming out anywhere then the only choice is a blown head gasket.

The reason the resorvior had a leak was the pressure from the engine got into the coolant and blew up the reservior bottle. This is a real common problem with saturns.

Get the car inspected. A simple test a a reapir shop will confirm this.

Be sure to flush all the stop leak out or it will clog the heater core up and the heater will not work.

Well could be a couple of things. It could be the thermostat "sticking". Or it could be like a couple of vehicles that I've had where a small radiator leak has caused it to overheat. I would try flushing the radiator and see how that does. What I would recommend though is Prestone Super Flush be used to flush all the **** out. And when you refill the radiator use a tube of radiator stop leak (the powder type). You can use the pellets, but the powder seems to work a little better. What I've always done is to put the Prestone flush in the radiator and let it circulate through the system with the heat on the highest setting. After maybe 10 minutes remove the lower radiator hose making sure that you have on long sleeves and are using long rubber gloves so as not to scald yourself, because it will be scalding hot. Once all of it is drained out, I just used a hose and let the water run through there and circulate and come out at the disconnected radiator hose, maybe another 2 minutes. After that, put the radiator hose back on. Add the powder stop leak product and add radiator fluid until full. If this does not stop the overheating then you may need to replace the thermastat but I would start here first. It has worked with me on (3) different vehicles.

The year of the vehicle, rusty liquid, and overheating, says your radiator could use a replacement. If it was your water pump, you would have liquid coming out of the water pump itself.
