Problem starting 6.5 TD engine in Hummer H1 1997 Hi, I have a H1 1997, i was changing the Injectors caps, and when the car came back it was suffering from late starting.. in the beginning it was starting well when cold, and not starting at all when hot (until i spray any flammable material in the air intake), now it doesnt start cold or warm !! ..... I have tried almost everything, Changed Lift pump, changed glow plugs, changed OPS, changed the PMD on the IP, made sure batteries are OK, made sure batteries connections are fine, cleaned up the diesel lines IP is relatively new, injectors were recently maintained, a water separator was also installed 6 months back.. One comment that can be relevant, the car gets overly hot now when driving, that i why i changed PMD, i thought i got bad with the heat in the engine bay. I am stranded, no one seems to know what could be wrong over here, only 1 guy thinks it could be the engine losing internal necessary compression pressure by normal wear!! Really appreciate your help ..

Has the fuel pressure regulator been checked?

Check the cam position sensor and crank pposition sensor- they will test like a tansistor, because they are a hall effect transistor. I suspect one of those two sensors may be at fault.

Thanks a lot John, but what tools are needed to test these sensors ? , any idea how can i do this myself ?

  • Anonymous Oct 31, 2012

Yes, an ohm meter is all you really need. Isolate the leads tot he sensor(s) themself, it should be 3 leads, but if 2 that is okay. Essentially you check fbetween the three leads with test leads to determine which combinations give you the same reading or similar reading with one wire being common to the negative lead of the test meter. This would be the Base lead of the HE transistor. It should read anywhere from 5000 ohms to 50,000 ohms. With leads reversed, so the red test lead is now on that base lead, The resistance should be about 4 times higher to 10 times higher than the first reading. This woulld be a sensor that is "ok". If the resistance is infinite for any of the measurements, the sensor is bad. The same will be true if the resistance is the same regardless of orientation of test leads to transistor leads. The last part of the check on the 3 wire type is between the two leads that were tested in relation to the Base lead. (With a 2 lead type this is going to be the same general results) You should see about 20 ,000 to 50thousand ohms one way and then the other way should give a different resistance on the order of at least 2 (either half of the first reading, or twice that of the first reading.) If it is the same resistance both ways, replacement is a really good idea because the sensor will be prone to give spurious results, and not trip an error code in the engine computer.

you probably need a new mass air flow sensor. disconnect and drive it. I had the same problem and when I disconnected the sensor it ran good.

SOURCE: '94 S 10 Blazer V6 Vortec EFI. Fuel pressure

your statement is fuel pump work ok, have you tested for proper fuel pressure. just because the fuel pump works it could have less pressure needed to start the engine. maybe the fuel filter is plugged. start out by replacing the fuel filter, if this doesn't fix it, you need to pressure test the pump. even 10 psi reduction in pressure will allow the engine not to start.

SOURCE: 2000 ford super duty 7.3 diesel will not cold start

you need to have the engine coolant switch checked, since the computer relies solely on sensors, the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

Does anyone know if there are seat track extenders for a hummer h2 .I'm 6'5 and need the seat to go back just a little bit more

There's no after market product that will help you.

Your options are to have an engineering shop that will fabricate extended tracks for you, or alter the seat itself so it will fit further back on the current tracks.

How to change 2007 h3 thermostat?

Hi, Follow the top rad hose to the engine. You will have 2-3 screws to undo and under that is the thermostat. replace if needed.
You will have to drain some rad fluid because you will have a mess to clean up if you don't. The petcock is at bottom of rad. Good luck.

99 jeep cherokee with 4.0 straight six takes extra long to start

The request doesn't say what the problem is...takes extra time to start?

Sounds like fuel-related - injectors/fuel pump/fuel filter? Is there a strong fuel smell or black exhaust for a few seconds/minutes after starting it when it's sat overnight? If so, then you've got a leak causing excessive fuel...kind like 'flooding' the engine on old cars w/Carbs.

It could also be the temp. sensor. If it thinks the car is 'warm' it won't give the car enought fuel to start when cold.

My hummer has hard start when it's turned off for ashort period,

A scan tool should be able to read the temp pids at operating temperature to see if they are "off" enough to cause problems . Check for fuel lines to close to heat sources as boiling of the fuel causing vapor lock may be happening after heat soaking .

Rough idle change allsensers still same new plugs

I had a 98 5.9 that had low idle, it endeded up being intake gaskets that fixed it, u may need to pull ur injectors and kleen the fuel rail side of injectors with carb n choke cleaner and an air blower, the engine side can b kleened as well but usually not needed grease the O-rings lightly so they slip back together. cycle the key 3 to 6 times to refill the fuel rails before trying to start

I have a h1 hummer that will not start i have changed the glow plugs and the controler also the box on the injecter pump. I am geting fuel and the glow plugs are working. The hummer has set for a year....

Diesel fuel doesn't go bad like gasoline, at least not as fast. I've been around diesels in construction equipment and sometime a machine will sit for a couple years and still start right up. You have other problems. I don't know that much about the Hummer diesels but, Ford uses a high pressure oil pump to fire the injectors. The main oil pump supplies oil to the high pressure oil pump reservoir and then the high pressure pump supplies oil to the injectors. If Hummer uses a similar system the reservoir may have drained down and there is no oil for the high pressure pump to pump. Ford has plug where a person can fill that reservoir manualy if necessary. Maybe try cranking it some more, don't crank it more than 10-15 seconds at a time. Walk away from it for 10 minutes or so, then try again, make sure you let the glow plugs cycle. If it don't start after a half dozen tries, you may have to have a mechanic look at it. I'm sorry I can't be more help.
