Hard to start

1997 saturn sL2 won't start all the time. did a check and needed to replace crank shaft sensor. I did this and still having the same problem

  • burtonbeezy Feb 23, 2009

My car is always stalling: if i'm idling around town too much at stop lights or traffic, and especially if i'm in reverse. Also if I have the AC on and I'm idling. When I drive on the freeway, I have no problems. I've looked this up on numerous boards, and find the spark plug wires, IAC valve, throttle body/coils, and now heater sensor.
It also jerks all the time in low RPMs (which is where new spark plug wires was suggested).
Any suggestions what I should replace, or if I should just replace valve?

have a 97 sl1 which was very hard to start and when it would it ran rough and stalled out easily. sometimes no start. It turned out to be the heater sensor on the engine block (right side as you face the hood. just under the heater hose. the part was 17.00 or 27.00
I don't remember which but it ultimately was sending misinformation to the computer module and it always "thought" it was too hot and would adjust incorrectly. the major clue was therm
indicator read hot even when cold and just started. took me 2 days
to figure it out before spending money. good luck.

1998 Saturn sl2 died while driving. Lights on the dash board come on when I turn the key, but then engine doesn't crank or start

run the fault codes and check for cam/crank position sensor failure
check that he cam shaft is turning ( broken belt)

Car Won't start after motor swap

Have you checked whether it is on model?,does your vehicle can communicate with the variable sensors of the new engine? are the crank and cam shaft sensors the same on serial number or are different? Does the injection system gets the correct fuel pressure or is not sufficient.

Saturn sl2 problems

Have you checked the fuel injectors? Fuel filter? Fuel pump? Sounds to me like you have a fuel delivery problem.

Try the following: remove the airbox and spray some starter fluid into the throttle body while someone else cranks the motor. If it starts for a second and dies, then you KNOW you have a fuel delivery problem. If it doesn't change and still won't start, then the problem is either a bad sensor somewhere (crank position sensor, maybe?) or no compression.

2002 saturn sl won't start, turn over but won't start

Done cars have a kill switch if they are low on oil. Check your oil. If the oil is good, it may be the ignition switch.

97 saturn SL2 turns over but sometimes doesn't start. Turning the key off and then trying again usually works. Yesterday it wouldn't fire until just when I started to turn the key off, then it caught. Any...

This problem usually doesn't show up on diagnostic, it is a problem that saturn has with many of it's cars, it is either the ignition module or the crank sensor, I think replacing the crank sensor would be your best bet, that is what was wrong with mine and I didn't find that out until I replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, the ignition module and the coils, trust me, go with the crank sensor.

I have a saturn sl2 1996,,, it is hard to start i

fuel, oxygen, and spark. Check all of these. Is it getting air. Is your filter clean. Are you getting spark. if not check your plugs wires and coil. finaly check your fuel. Are you getting enough fuel. Replace the filter, make sure you are getting enough psi's before the injectors. also make sure the fuel pump is working.

You will probably need to put your car on a computer scanner.

Let me know what you find.
