A6 2.5 tdi possible injector pump failure or timing slip
I have just bought myself a very nice A6 Avant 2.5 tdi on a X reg 2000
the problem being after taking out for a test drive in which it ran a
drove lovely then buying it & having to wait a week to pick it up,
when i came to pick it up the dealer drove it round & it was very
noisy on which i remarked on, i know diesels are noisy but this was
like a knock but it did quieten slightly after a about 10 minutes, then
there was lots of smoke from the exhaust as i put my toe down,
I only got 2 miles from where i had bought it from i pulled into the
garage & filled up with a full tank of diesel the thing wouldn't
start! then it started i moved 10 ft or so to the air pump, then it
would not start for love or money, tried jump leads on it as them
battery died, then got the RAC out,
it fired on easy star but would not run, the there was fuel getting up
to injector pump but low pressure, bypassed the fuel lines & put a
direct feed to the injector pump still would not start,
then done a fault code reading which gave 1374 PUMP Timing & 505
INJECTOR COMMENCING OUT OF RANGE, on which they diagnosed a possible
timing belt slip!
On getting towed back to the dealer i bought it off i left it with
them, they charged the battery over night & it started straight
away the next morning & ran fine far a good half hr or so, but they
tried to start it that Afternoon & the problem was back!
They had a mechanic out to look at it & he said it was the pump in
the diesel tank & it had to be removed & drained to fit a new
pump.
but in my mind if there as been a direct feed to the injector pump then
all of the fuel system as been bypassed so eliminating the problem
being in the fuel tank? plus i am sure you can get to the components in
the fuel tank via a panel in the boot, so this makes me very suspicious
on what the mechanic is saying.
I know this quite long winded but i need what advice i can get & decide to try & get my money back or not.
i have just bought a x reg 2.5tdi v6 audi a6 avant as a non runner the person who had it before me had the fuel pump timing belt ripped off 6 teeth he fitted a new belt but still could not get it running.so i bought it first place i started was i fitted a new cam belt and pump belt the pump timing was out by a quater of a turn great i thought that must be the problem the next problem was the pump in the fuel tank so i replaced that as well(yes it can be done through a hatch in the boot)any way got fuel up to filter and injection pump and injectors still wont run it will fire but not run immobiliser is workingi have just bought a x reg 2.5tdi v6 audi a6 avant as a non runner the person who had it before me had the fuel pump timing belt ripped off 6 teeth he fitted a new belt but still could not get it running.so i bought it first place i started was i fitted a new cam belt and pump belt the pump timing was out by a quater of a turn great i thought that must be the problem the next problem was the pump in the fuel tank so i replaced that as well(yes it can be done through a hatch in the boot)any way got fuel up to filter and injection pump and injectors still wont run it will fire but not run immobiliser is working
The problem has been diagnosed as being the module on the injector pump, which you can not buy on its own, so the whole injector pump as to come off & reconditioned, plus it has to be put on a computer & tuned to the engine, a very costly proses as the front of the car has to come off, around 4 hrs labor & £600+ VAT just for the pump, so job that will cost well over £1000+
But luckily the car dealer gave me my money back. be carefull if your buying a car with starting problems that will run 1 minute then not the next as the first diagnotics you will get would be the lift pump in the tank & will cost around £300 to be changed then it still will not run, then comes the biggie the injector pump! which all in all could cost in excess of £1500 to get to the bottom of.

Re: A6 2.5 tdi possible injector pump failure or timing...
I had the same sort of problem withmy A^ 2.5 TDI sports, after the dealer spending approx 1200 quid the problem was still there .
Does the waring light on the dash [glow plug symbol] show under hard acceleration?
After all the so called UK Bosch and Audi -VW experts diagnostics failed to find the fault including changing the sensor injector on NO2 cyl the problem was located by myself after giving up on so called experts { X being un known, spert being drip under pressure] all of the symptoms dissapeared when the fuel tank screen was removed and cleanned, the screen had a 2mm covering that looked like a rubber flap. Some 30,000 miles on all is perfect.
There definitely will be a fuse in the circuit. If you don't know the location of the fuse block, I suggest you buy a manual for your car from Haynes which will contain all such detail and will answer many future questions too.
There is also a relay you need to locate that powers the window circuit when the vehicle is operating which may be in the same housing with the fuse block.

STOP the engine immediately !!! There is an oil pump failure of 2.0 TDI engines ! Remove the oil pan and the oil pump & balancer shafts assembly.
Either the shaft driving the pump from the balance shaft rounds off or the balance shaft drive gears eat themselves. The same issue ... low oil pressure warning light, noisy rattling engine, and the turbo has gone. Diagnosis: oil pump balancer shaft assembly ...
Many Passat show excess chain noise and wear anywhere from 50,000-100,000+ miles. Cars have broken the chains/tensioner as low as 65,000 miles. This is just a range of cars that have been reported, diagnosed, and repaired. The actual statistics on dealer repairs or failures is unknown and I've heard cars over 100,000 miles that, in my opinion as a non mechanic (most mechanics wouldn't recognize this sound and problem either), aren't noisy. From what has been reported, noticeable noise/chain-tensioner wear/greater risk of breaking is around 60,000-150,000 miles. Your case may vary. The most obvious symptom is a rattling loose noise from the oil pan. Unless you listen to a Passat TDI with a tight chain and one with a loose chain, it's hard to describe the difference other than rattling chain noise. The reason the gear drive oil pump modification was started is because a few mechanics who specialize in TDI have seen many worn oil pump chains/sprockets/tensioners. There will always be a few defective parts that come off the assembly line and all mechanical components like chains wear out sooner or later, but in my opinion, the failure rate is abnormal considering the number of Passat TDI sold versus the number of reported oil pump failures. This does not necessarily mean that every or even most Passat TDI will have this problem, just that the reported failure rate is high enough to consider this part a design failure. Nobody, not even VW-Audi knows the average time between failure for these parts and the percentage of cars that will have this problem, but they changed this design and if you want to not have this specific failure, the only sure way is to swap to the geared module.
TO RESET, MOST VEHICLES TURN ON THE IGNITION SWITCH, [DO NOT START THE ENGINE ] PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR 3 TIMES, THE LIGHT SHOULD GO OUT. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK, YOU CAN DISCONNECT THE NEG. BATTERY CABLE FOR A MINUTE THEN RECONNECT, START THE ENGINE, THE LIGHT SHOULD BE OUT
COULD BE STOPPED UP FUEL FILTER.WEAK FUEL PUMP.BAD SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES.IDLE SPEED TOO LOW.BAD FUEL INJECTOR.TO SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY HAVE VOLKSWAGON PCM SCANNED TO LOOK FOR ANY TROUBLE CODES.
This may be caused by a retarded injector pump timing. You should have this checked. It's not something you can do at home it involves many precision tools. Thank you, Dana
you dont say what miles the car has done.but you should now be using semi synthetic 20/50 oil and try using a fuel additive(redex/wynns)to clean the injectors.if you are using oil it is possible that the engine has lost some of its compression due to ring/valve wear.did you know that to convert your engine to a 130/150bhp unit, you only need to change the ecu try"diesel tuning"website.....
try puling the fuse out of the back of the radio and then letting it sit for an hour then you have to push a sequance of buttons to put the radio code in so it will unlock
Possibly air in the fuel lines. Possibly Fuel Injection Pump Case Relief Valve has come apart (funny looking ,10mm bolt with 2 round sides on left side of Injection Pump). Great site for TDIs - www.tdiclub.com - forum thread on this very problem. Great people will help get you going.
hi changing glow plugs is nothing to do with this code i would change the fuel filter and put a injector cleaner into the fuel tank as if this doesn,t cure the problem the only other thing that affects the pump is the timming belt has it slipped a tooth is there a marked drop in preformance if not these pumps are expensive very expensive best of luck yates210456
