The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

It sounds like the fuel is gelled, is it cold where you are and what are running for fuel? If your in freezing weather you should be running blended fuel, straight No.2 will gel at about 25 degrees (F). Take a hair dryer or heat gun and warm the fuel filter up. Or if you can get in warm garage and get it started thin the diesel with kerosene, about 2 gallons to 20 gallons of diesel. Then drive it for at least five miles so the kerosene gets circulated through the system. I've used gasoline to do this too, but only use about 1 gallon to 20 gallons of diesel.

SOURCE: will start and run if I rev the engine but will not hold idel.

It could be the throttle body gasket. The gasket gets old and hard and will leak between the throttle body and intake manifold. Also check for vacuum lines that are broken or split.

Sounds like the valve seals may be bad and leaking oil into the cylinders when it sits. This would cause a bluish smoke. One thing to help figure out the problem is are you using oil? If so I would explain the problem of smoking to a good trusted mechanic. He would be able to advise on a valve seal job or if you have high milage other options you would have to repair the problem.

I have an Isuzu Wizard 1998 Diesel 3000cc. The vehicle starts well but has taking off problems. It really struggles to take off at robots or giveway signs. Please help. Micah Mbano, Harare, Zimbabwe.

usually if its take offs problems is not getting enough air or fuel so it could be a blocked air filter or fuel filter. these can do this. it could also not have the right fuel pressure this can be down to the fuel filter. if there is no other problems at driving normal i would check these. if you have no engine light then there is no problems detected from the ecu, this does not mean there is no problems its still could have problems but they are in the limits on the software of the ecu. but if the filters have not been changed in awhile they cause this problem air filters you normal check them from time to time and if it caked in muck or black change this, but fuel filter you need to replace every 5 year depending on travelling miles this could be around 5000 to 7000 miles also the areas you buy your fuel best rule is 3-5 years is best, they don't cost that much same as an air filter. hope this helps.

Just wondering whether it would be at all possible installing a BMW X5 3000cc Diesel Engine into a 2003 Isuzu Bighorn fitted with 3000cc 4JX1 Diesel motor?

I suspect that the bell housing configuration for the gear box will be different and will require some sort of adaptor plate. Better to replace gear box and motor as a unit . Then all you will have to consider is exhaust layout. Water hoses and engine mounts and tail shaft lengths.

My 1994 Cadillac deville. Has been sitting for 5 years. I have got it running properly as far as the motor is concerned. But my brakes go all the way to the floor. The car stops, but not good. Sometime...

The first thing I would try is changing brake fluid, as brake fluid is hydroscopic (absorbs water) even with system sealed moisture in the air is getting into the reservoir. Some vehicles have a specific bleed procedure and as I am not familiar with this car, it will be a good idea to find this out. If that doesn't fix it then start looking at the booster system, this can be done by pushing the brake pedal down, start the car, once it is running the pedal should go down a little bit farther without any extra effort. If those 2 are ok then it is time to start looking at the calipers and/or wheel cylinders. Hope this helps
