1993 VW Golf diesel stalls/blows #15 fuse wh engine revs too high

This is in two parts: PROBLEM and YOUR HELP, many thanks (and Happy New Year).!

PROBLEM:
I have a 1993 VW Golf diesel, which has recently developed a stalling problem.

Normal 0 false false false /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Normal 0 false false false /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} This typically occurs when the engine’s revs jump, either because I’m accelerating, or I have downshifted from eg. 4th to 3rd. The engine will suddenly cut out (i.e. it doesn't cough or sputter - it just goes quiet). Subsequently turning the key in the ignition generates noise from (I assume) the starter motor, but the engine itself doesn't turn over/ catch.

The local (non-VW) garage identified the immediate cause of the stall as a blown #15 fuse. Their attempt to solve the problem was apparently limited to trying to get the fuse to blow. They couldn't get the fuse to blow, and accordingly were unable to identify the root cause. Since then, I've been replacing the fuse when it blows, and that solves the problem in the short term.

Yesterday, the problem worsened; the fuse blew, but the car still didn't start when I replaced the fuse.

I don't think it's the battery, because the lights, dashboard, fans, and radio all work even after the car stalls.

I don't think it's a result of cold weather, because the problem started in early October (when the overnight temperature was probably 5C/ 40F).

That said, my recollection is that the blown fuse typically occurs shortly after I've started the car, so it may be correlated with a cold engine.

YOUR HELP:
1) Point me to/ provide a list of all the circuits and fuses in the 1993 VW (i.e. not just the #15 fuse) so that I have an idea which electrical circuits go through which fuses..
2) Suggest any possible root causes and diagnostics.

Many thanks!

That's the wiring diagram, thanks - still hoping to get suggestions/ diagnostics for the root cause!

  • TheLastLion Jan 03, 2009

My apologies - As I look at it, it appears that the rating applies to all responses
collectively. I thought it would apply to individual posts.

The "Inappropriate" rating was intended to go against the SECOND comment (which looked like it was posted by a bot).

I had thought I had rated yours "Helpful" - I certainly indicated so in my own comment ("That's the wiring diagram, thanks - still hoping to get suggestions/ diagnostics for the root cause!") - but obviously screwed up. Sorry!

To other posters: Please keep other responses coming!

http://alldatadiy.com/ you can go to this site and buy a subscription for your car. It will have all the info you are looking for. It's good for 1 year and well worth the money if you like to fix your own car.

Why would you rate this as inappropriate. I sent you the complete wiring diagram that shows everything you asked for. If you can't read a wiring diagram don't take it out on me. An inappropriate rating is whats inappropriate.

No the second comment was from me to. You should try alldata. I swear it will have everything you need to get your car fixed. I own quite a few subscriptions because I own a repair shop and I use them whenever I have a problem like yours. Component locations, wiring diagrams and all test procedures even technical service bullitens that only the dealers get. There could be a bulliten for your problem.

VW golf 4 03 model `s spark plugs wires are damaged by rats & are now partly not insulated can these cause the car to stall & cut when driving? It also gets to 90 degrees on the engine temperature...

Partly insulated spark plugs wires will cause your engine to misfire badly as they will cause High Voltage short-circuits by arcing to nearby engine parts: they will certainly cause your engine to stall and cut off! The misfiring will also cause timing issues and cause your engine to overheat and 'knock'.
This is a serious problem that could badly damage your engine so I suggest that you replace the damaged cables immediately. By the way, using ordinary electrical insulation tape will not help much as they are not designed for high voltage (kV range) and the cost of high voltage rubberized insulation tape as an interim solution may be higher than the cost of a cable kit.
Hope it helps. Let me know how you go.

1997 VW Golf Cigarette Lighter Fuse Location

Thanks, I found the fuses I was looking for. Just one note - if your fuse box is like the one in my Golf, there's a little lever on the left hand side that allows you to release the fuse box from the stand and drop it down for easier access.

Engine swap

Generally it is not recommended using parts either that the ones designed for same model, however some Passat engine connects same way as Golf. You need to know the Passat engine year and verify engine mounting procedure and connections positions. Getting the two Haynes manuals for the two VW models can help you to compare.
