Hello. It seems the 'shift linkage' is 'wore out' on your truck; causing unwanted 'shifts'. Usually there is no trouble with the shifter itself; just the 'linkage'. When the shifter is 'manhandled'; this is what happens. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.
With the shift linkage disconnected from tranny, can you shift tranny by hand? If not, sounds like a tranny issue. There are safety issues with taking shift linkages loose from tranny, You have to sure vehicle can't roll, incase you do shift it. Safety is your responsibility.
Is this automatic or manual tranny?
Is the vehicle on level ground? Usually, you set the parking brake before you kill it, so the tranny isn't holding the vehicle. If the vehicle has a bind on the tranny, it may not want to shift?
I don't know year--make--model? I'm not a tranny person.
POSSIBLE CAUSES SHIFT LINKAGES LOOSE WORN OR BINDING.TIGHTEN REPAIR OR LUBRICATE LINKAGE. CHECK FOR SHIFT FORK CRACK INSERTS WORN OR FORK BINDING ON RAIL.COULD HAVE ELECTRICAL FAULT IN THE FRONT AXLE OR AUTOMATIC TRANSFER CASE.NEED TO HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED.
If it is an automatic... there may be a problem with the shift linkage .. I would have it looked at before it breaks loose and you are stuck somewhere over it...
Manual shifter ? It sounds like a linkage issue there too... or maybe the throw out bearing on the clutch hanging up...
the linkage has slipped and is not in the notch on the shift lever so slide he shift lever into place then tighten the bolt down so it will hold the shifter on the trasnmisson, this is caused by a loose nut on the shifter nut.
Loosen the bolt thats on the trans that holds the linkage on..Some one may have tightened it to much..Or grab a hold of it and see if it is sloppy and moves around..If so its loose inside trans..Another possible cause the linkage from column to trans may be binding up when trying to shift..Hope this helps you and Have A Great Night
