Sounds like your shift cable came unhooked or just plain Broke, it hooks to shifter and hooks to transmission, If it moves freely I would say it's Broken, and that is why car won't start cause it is still in drive
replace the shift cable remove it and see if it moves freely if not replace if it moves freely check the shift mecanisim on the tranny if it moves freely then the problem is the shifter... take it apart clean it and reassemble.. this should do it...
was there any problems up till this because its sounds like the shifting forks in your transmission broke if it moves freely i had this problem in my car one time might be a cable snapped loose or could be a clutch problem
