I have a 1998 Ford one ton van that will run about five minutes after jumping it then the engine will die. Had the alternator checked three times and it checked out ok. Replaced the battery and the problem still is there. The battery indicator light is on. also replaced both battery terminals with new ones. After jumping the voltsge meter shows about 14 amps. runs five minutes and the voltage meter starts to drop. when it hits eight volts the engine stalls. Is it possible the starter or thwe solenid may be shorting out and drawing the battery down? By the way, the lights and wipers do not run to full capacity about 50%.Thanks for your help!

The throttle body needs cleaning. It has some carbon build up, and when the battery went dead the computer lost its learned values, one of which is base throttle position. Now its reset back to factory specs, not accounting for a dirty throttle body. Seen it a million times

SOURCE: Battery won't stay charged while running. Alternator is fine tho.

It seems that your battery is not getting its charging amount from the rectifier which comes from the dynamo when the engine is in running condition. So just your rectifier and check the output of the dynamo to be sure thats OK............sodeep

I can get my van to start when I jump it off. But as soon as I unhook the Jumper cables it dies.

a dead battery and the alternator not working will cause this.. the engine requires a minimum 12.5 volts to run the computer..if not it shuts down..check the battery and see if it has power if not replace or charge for several hours and retest it..repost with findings..

Hi, to check the alternator, check the voltage with the engine running and the jumper cables removed. If the voltage is less than 14 VDC with the engine running, remove the alternator and have it tested at your local chain store.

The van lost all the power, no ligths, wont star and it has a new battery

SOUND LIKE ALTERNATOR FAULTY.HAVE VECHICLE BATTERY CHARGED OR JUMPED STARTED.WITH ENGINE RUNNING CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE WITH ENGINE RUNNING SHOULD BE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS. IF NOT ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR FAILED.BUT FIRST CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND CHECK ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES FOR DAMAGE OR LOOSE CONNECTION.WHEN YOU TAKE OLD ALTERNATOR TO AUTO PARTS STORE LET THEM TEST ALTERNATOR FIRST.MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE ELECTRICAL WIRING PROBLEMS IN VECHICLE.

I suspect you hav a defective alternator. Remans are famous for this. Take it back where youbought it and have them put it on their testor to make sure it works.

A battery should read about 12 1/2 volts when charged, engine off. It should read about 14 1/2 volts with the engine running, if the alternator is working. Try that first.

report back resuts.

Check for loose battery terminals. Car will not start without jump because battery is not connected properly. Starter is probably good or car would not start with or without jump. If alternator is bad and not producing current, car would die after running a short while as battery would out of juice and without alternator current the car would die - so probably alternator is good. If connections are all good, get a voltmeter and test the battery voltage - it should be over 12.75 volts. If not, battery is not holding charge.

HI there
Try checking a few things first like jump start again and then take off the earth lead only{black} and let it run for 6 minute on idle then turn on the head lights main beam ,,if the engine dies in about 2 minutes then the Alternator isent working full power as it should be pumping out 13.5 volts min and the lights should be bright and stay on... if not you have a Alt problem still like a bad feed to alternator or a bad connection on the battery post or a loose wire from engine to body {earth wire } also check out the relay to Alt ..
Let me know how you get on . RON
