First thing to do is get the codes read at a auto parts store. If there are no codes get a can of throttle body cleaner and follow the directions. Clean the maf sensor.
Be sure coolant level is correct. Then perform an OBDII scan of the stored fault history. Look for a coolant temp. sensor fault
Have you read out the diagnostic trouble codes? Since the check engine light has come on, there should be one or more stored diagnostic codes. Since your 1992 is before OBD-II became the standard (in the US at least) you'll need to do either the wire/paper clip method or find someone with an OBD-I scan tool for GM products.
