thats sounds like a possible boost control solenoid failure.when the boost solenoid fails it wont activate a warning light and because of the lack of boost the engine computer fail safe feature will put it in limp mode in order to keep the driver from harming the engine

The check engine light gets power from the same circuit and fuse as the seat belt and some of the other warning lights.
And the ground comes from the computer.
So if the other warning lights work, and the bulb for the check engine light is not burned out, the problem is in the wiring or in the computer.

Check engine light comes on and off, these are indication that there is some error code stored in your vehicles ECM. The engine module computer needs to be scanned. These will give the code and as per the error code the further problem can be detected and confirmed. The engine light indicator blinks or remains steady on dash when engine computer noticed any problem with any engine electrically operated components.

My 1999 Jag XJ8 did the same thing when the cruise control was activated (red button by the gear shift), but I wasn't actually using the cruise control. I deactivated the cruise control and the fail safe message no longer appears.

This is the 'Check Engine' warning light. This normally comes on when there are sensors (usually the engine knock sensor) that are faulty or indicate some type of engine trouble.

Have this diagnosed by a qualified technician immediately.
