Glove box wont latch - 2002 Kia Sportage

Find another Kia Sportage and look at that working glove box to see what you should do to fix yours. It helps if you or a friend is "mechanically inclined".

If you look under glove box you will see two to four screws that hold the glove box on. Take out the screws and the glove box will drop down and you can get inside and release latch..then you can get a replacement latch and replace.

check under the glove box door to see if you can see the hinges. Sometimes you can unscrew the hinges from the bottom. Else you have to knock out the hinge pin on both hinges, open the door from the bottom and see if you can swing the door up to undo the latch.
If this does not work, cut a hole in the bottom ot the glove box, it is usually made of plastic or papier mache, release the latch from inside, then you can remove the plastic box once it is open and replace it with a new one. It will cost you, but it will be less expensive that breaking down the metal door!

Its a common problem with the 2003-1007 accord. You will need to replace the glove box latch assembly. If you can find it separate! Most of the junk yards sell a complete glove box. You could check ebay? 03 04 05 06 07 HONDA ACCORD GLOVE BOX OEM

Remove side clips holding the glove compartment into the console and unhook the elastic string that guides the compartment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

with a small flat head screw drive. pull the glove box latch and there will be a goldish small piece of metal behind glove box latch. remove the small gold metal piece ( you will have to break it out) and your glove box will open. the new latch will cost about 25-35 dollars. <!-- from fixya rte -->

It sounds like something got in the way of the latch when you closed it after putting your stuff in there. Take a screw driver and while gently prying on the door turn the latch at the same time. Once it opens and there wasn't anything jamming it then WD 40 time. Let me know how it turns out. Raz

Remove the glove box: unscrew 3 screws inside the box (in a row towards the top) and 2 on the outside (one on the bottom right side- open the car door to access it, and one on the bottom left side). Grab the bottom of the box and pull it toward you. It will come off.

Once it's off, flip it over. There are 2 screws that hold the latch housing on the box (you'll find them in the 2 circles that are cut into the plastic). Unscrew them.

Next, flip it back over to the front and stick a small flat screwdriver between the latch housing and the glove box part that it's stuck into. Gently pull the latch and the whole thing should come out.

Pop the new one in, replace the screws, put your glove box back in your car, and you're good to go!
