I have a 2001 Kia Sportage Limited with a trouble code p0171 plus I can smell gas if I have a 1/2 tank or fuller. Any idea what it could be?

I have changed my oxygen sensor, evap canister, and cleaned various connectors. It has also been tuned up recently.

SOURCE: kia sportage fuel gauge unit not working ?

hi this sounds like it could be a couple of things, first the obvious have you checked the fuse? or it might be the relay in the fuse box might need replacing, and the fuel sender unit in the fuel tank, you also can check out the wires going to the sender unit, sometimes you can find these under the rear seat or in the boot/trunk area might be a simple case of one of the wires have come adrift there is a couple of things to check before having the sender unit replaced or the Gage..hope that helps

Car runs better when fuel tank is above 1/2 tank.

Try a new air filter and clean the MAS. Only use cleaner specifically for those sensors. Dont touch any internal wires.

Gas smell

I had a similar problem with a 2000 Kia Sportage. The check engine light came on all the time. Part of the problem seemed to be the fuel cap having high pressure. Then one fine day I smelled gas fumes from the rear of the vehicle. After removing the fuel pump cover in the rear behind the seats, I found gas coming from a hose from the tank. I then (sometime later) I found a crack in another hose. The hose was from the filler neck. It caused a lack of vapor pressure and a smell. The check engine light now was off.

Own a 2001 Kia Sportage which spews gasoline out when refueling. also tends to go dead when driving down highway.

-Check breath line (vapor line), it might be bend. Tha's why it spill gas when refill.
Q: What is breath line and where is it...?
A: It's a small tube line above the filler line that along with the filler libe to the tank.

-You mean it will die when you try to press more gas...?
-If so. Possible need new spark plug.
-Check and test TPS (trottle position sensor) Must be within specification
Check mass air flow sensor & Clean. Careful do not damege.

Check around the fuel pump and make sure none of the hose are leaking. Some pumps have an open space for venting. It often will stay moist in that area.

Check engine light is on

I would disconnect the battery for three minutes and reconnect it. That should remove the code. You will have drive the car up to about 75 miles to see if the code does or does not show up again. It may have been reading the amount of air in the system from removal of the injector.

I have a 2000 KIA sportage and recently I smell gas while driving. I park on the driveway and couldn't see any leaks anywhere but when I park in the garage, the entire garage smell of gas for the longest...

I had a pinhole develope in the bottom of the gas tank in my 99 Sportage. I had similar symptoms, could not find the leak because the insulation in the skid plate under the gas tank was soaking it up. There was a recall on some of the Sportages for this problem. You can give you VIN number to a Kia dealer and they can check or you can contact Kia directly. You might be able to get it repaired free of charge.
