Question about 1987 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

1987 honda prelude 1.8L wont run

Will not run, if starter fluid is sprayed in carburetors then it will run, checked fuel lines and seems to have fuel in lines near carbs, fuel at rear fuel filter spills out when hose disconnected, so im thinking the problem may be somewhere else? or could it be a bad fuel pump or relay?

Where do I spray the starter fluid (air intake?) for Chrysler Silhouette. Ran out of gas and it seems carburetor needs starter fluid to kick it..not sure where air intake is locater.. or where to open carb...

there is a large tube that goes to your throttle body (you do not have a carb), remove it and spray there-be careful, starter fluid is highly explosive, spray 2 or 3 short bursts into the top of the throttle body opening, and install the tube (you don't have to tighten the clamp). You may have to repeat this a few times, if you can only get the car to run for a few seconds 3 or 4 times, and it will not run on it's own, you have a fuel delivery problem, and no amount of starter fluid is going to fix it.

Engine will not run, seems like it is not getting gas?

Spray carb spray or starter fluid into intake hose then try to start. If starts then suspect fuel pump and or fuel pump relay. If does not start check spark. Pull off spark plug wire and ground to metal make sure no fuel is present and be careful not to spark yourself, crank car while grounding out wire if no spark suspect coil, fuse, ignition control module, crank sensor, wiring, or computer.

MY 1992 toyota celica acted like it was running out of gas and just quite and will not run agian. I have checked the fuel pump and the plugs are fireing. What else could be wrong?

could be alot of different things. try disconnecting the fuel line at the motor to see if you have fuel when the key is turned on. (put open end of line in a bottle preferrably clear to inspect for debris or water) If not replace fuel filter. could be a clogged catalytic converter, could be clogged injectors (if when you remove the fuel line at the motor there is fuel coming out when ignition is turned on) could be air filter is clogged. You can get rid of most of these without disconnecting anything by getting a can of choke and carb cleaner. Use it like you would starter fluid. (dont use starter fluid as it may lock up your motor) disconnect air filter and spray about a 2 second full spray into the air filter hose. have someone try to start the car. If it starts then you know its a fuel delivery problem and narrows it down for you.

Just dies and wont restart

sound like you need to purge the air out of the system if it's fuel injected there should be a looks like an air valve on the fuel line at the rack
just use a flat screw driver to depress and let the air out but watch out if you are doing this while trying to start the truck fuel could go everywhere
be carefull

Comment from the FixYa Moderator Staff:

I DISAGREE with the solution provided by Eliase.

You should NEVER spray 'starting fluid' in the engine compartment.

Starting fluid contains ether, and is extremely flammable.

Usage of staring fluid to look for vacuum leaks is a potentially dangerous situation.

I respectfully request that you refrain for using starting fluid.

What you CAN use, however, is a commonly found product, namely carburetor cleaner. This chemical is less flammable, and is used very often in the automotive business. Spray the carb cleaner near the intake manifold(s) where they connect to the block. If the idle changes, you have found the area that needs attention.

I would also doubt that you have a head gasket issue.

Mirage sat idle for 4 month, turns over, gas tank was full, starts with starter fluid but stops in a sew seconds. any ideas?

Igood t sounds like water in the carb, (if it has one) or water in the fuel filter. Remove the fuel line from either the carb or injection system, turn the engine over until you get pure fuel through the line. reconnect, spray the starter fluid and it should go, it will osund rough, but a few good blips on the throttle, should clear the line. Let me know, if that doesn't work I have a few more things to try. Regards Dave

if this is a 1980 F150, emissionwiz is correct in saying it has a carburetor, if your engine runs on ether, you do not have fuel supply to the engine. Check fuel delivery at the front of carburetor, should be a line screwed into the carb, may be connected by a rubber hose, remove this line and crank engine, look to see fuel is gushing out of the line, if no fuel the pump is bad, check fuel lines back to pump for leaks, replace leaking lines if necessary. If you get fuel then your float inside the carb is stuck, and the carb will need some attention, hope this helps, let me know

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. try spraying carburetor cleaner or starter fluid around vacuum lines and intake while engine is running if you have a leak engine will speed up when cleaner hits leak.
