Question about 1997 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Where is the neutral safety switch on a 1997 mercury sable?

I have been trying to diagnose my old 1997 Mercury Sable and now I am 99% sure it is the Transmission Range Sensor that has gone out as its symptoms match perfect to that problem with the the check seat belt light coming on and off, the power windows won't work and the power steering alternates between working and not working. If I put it into Neutral or Park, everything immediately works fine again and there are no codes present either.

It is part of/incorporated into the transmission range selector switch. The switch is under the hood on the transmission where the shift cable connects to the shift post. See picture

SOURCE: i have a 96 mercury sable when istop it shifts to neutral

it sounds like you need your shifter cable adjusted or replaced or you may have a major motor mount problem that when you decel and acel you are rocking that cable out of postion. but i think it will just take a small adjustment. good luck

Transmission pan gasket

Not too hard at all, even easier if you have it up on a lift. But if I remember right the pan is easy to get to without having to remove anything else. It is a good idea to go ahead and replace the filter while you are there. Make sure you get the rubber seal out of the valve body when you remove the old filter.

How do I bypass neutral safety swith in a 2001 mercury sable

If the engine will not crank in park or neutral, you may be able to jumper the brown pink and the tan red wires at the switch. I would not jumper them with the switch connected in the circuit.
I am assuming you have already checked the starter relay.

97 mercury sable began having transmission jerking problem, husband changed filter, ran fine on test drive, notice fluid leaking had to replace oil switch, while oil switch was off i didnt know it, I drove...

Fluid change won't fix an internal problem, only
gives you new & clean fluid & sometimes causes it
to slip, if it was already & you didn't know it

I think it is time for a rebuild if it has over 85,000
miles on it

Not a bad trans, just a short life expectancy

I know 85,000 sounds not long, but the taurus/sable has always
never gone long for the last 20 years or more

99 sable won't start, replaced battery, starter, alternator, but still wont even crank. code reader also said map sensor so it was reset worked for alittle but now nothing

If the car does not have a security system, I would check for voltage at the starter from the battery and from the key switch.
The power from the key switch goes thru the neutral safety switch before getting to the starter.

Broken coolant line.

I'm not sure if you can buy just that piece, it's recomended that you replace the entire heater hose assembly.
For reference the NAPA p/n is BK 8155114 go to thier web site and verify this is the part you're needing to replace.
You should flush and replace the coolant if it old.
Hope this help you with your problem.
