hi if the electrical side is ok leaves two options mechanical or fuel so if you can let me know what happened leading up to the car not starting i will be able to point you in the right direction it seems funny you should mention the security system [this does control the fuel pump but what makes you think this may be the problem, yates210456

SOURCE: VW Passat 2006 service now

2 options depending on your displays .

Press and hold the service wrench button with the ignition off. While still holding the button, turn your ignition to "on" (but don't start the car). Press the Min clock button and then release the wrench button.

With key off press and hold the 0.0 button on the cluster. With your other hand turn the key to the on position , while still holding 0.0 button, press the minute button for 1 second and you will see the service reset.

cheers

With the ignition off hold the wrench button down.
While still holding the wrench button turn on the ignition all the way, but do not start the car.

Release the wrench button and press and hold the minutes (min) for a few seconds.

Reset service interval alarm on VW Passat-01?

This is a mileage interval light that trips every 3,000 to 5,000 miles that indicates an oil change is necessary. You do not need a special tool to change your oil, nor do you need to bring the car in to the dealer.
1. Sit in the driver's seat of the Passat and close all the doors.
2. Position the trip/odometer button to display the odometer mileage reading, then hold it down with the forefinger on your left hand.
3. Turn the ignition key to the "key-on/engine-off" position to turn on all the power options for the Passat without actually starting the engine. At this point, a service indicator light will display (in the form of a wrench).
4. Press the minute adjustment button on the clock (or turn the knob clockwise on European manufactured Passats) and release the trip/odometer button.
Good luck and thank you using Fixya

Vw Passat 1998 B5 - Fail on display

The fail just tells you there is a fault and you need to find out what is causing it. In your case it is the airbag. It's over 10 years old and I'm afraid that's about the limit on an airbag. Sometimes disconnectong and reconnecting the airbag will fix it but don't hold your breath

With the Ignition Turned off, Look on the instrument display, Hold the right trip button. While holding the button Turn ignition on. The display read service, While still holding the trip button turn the left clock adjustment arm to the right or if you were adjusting the minutes on the clock, Release both then turn ignition off then on. I have used this trick myself. Hope this helps. SKetchlab.com Mugshot Collection

Indicators stopped working

This is a common problem on the 96-01cars, both the Passat and the Audi A4. The turn relay has died on you. It's built into the hazard light switch on the dash. This is a $20-30 part available at any Audi or VW dealership. Replace it and you'll be fixed.
