Question about 1990 Daihatsu Rocky

Open Question

Should the primer pump go hard

The car will not start... I have disconnected the hand Primer / Filter inlet line and can blow air back to the tank easily... I have replaced the filter and ensured the 1 way flow valve in the primer pump is working. however the primer pump has no real output...and does not pump up pressure... Is this a common fault Should I replace the pump..?

I think its time to check exhaust back pressure. You can install a gage where the o2 sensor screws into the exhaust BEFORE the catalytic converter.

Earl You have to be able to bleed all of the air out of the fuel filter and lines for your engine to run. If the fuel is leaking back to the tank there is a problem with the valves in the hand primer pump.You might have to replace the pump. Remove or loosen the bleed screw on the top of the filter and pump out all of the air so there is no more bubbles then loosen the fuel lines at the injectors and turn the engine over with the starter to bleed the lines. Only crank over with the starter for 30 seconds per try and give the starter time to cool down

Make sure you pre fill the filters with clean fuel. Locate the hand primer usually near the fuel lift pump. Unscrew the top till it pops up. Pump repeatedly until it gets hard to pump. You can crack the injector lines while pumping till fuel comes out or have someone crank the engine with the starter while you continue to pump the hand primer. Make sure after it's running the pump is pushed all the way down and tightened back up

I'm not familiar with that particular vehicle, but most diesel systems have a primer under the hood. You will need to pump that slowly until you feel some resistance. That will push fuel to the engine. The other pump may not be able to push fuel through until the system is primed.

If that doesn't get you running I would suspect a clogged fuel filter. Most Dodge vehicles have one on the frame. Just follow the fuel lines until you find it. There may also be one attached to the pump primer.

Changing that filter would my next action. Whether the pump is in the tank or added on outside the tank, you may still need to prime the system after the filter is replaced. Air in the line may cause it to stall, just reprime and start again.

How do you bleed the diesel fuel filter on a 1986 Toyota diesel Land Crusier?
I don't know a lot about these trucks but I can tell you that somewhere between the spin-on fuel filter and the I.P. (injection pump) is a 1.5" dia X 4" long steel primer. Just under the top of it is a spring. You will need to loosen or open the "Fuel supply line", at the I.P. (going from the filter, to the pump) and manually pump the fuel primer. Continue pumping the fuel primer until diesel flow from the opening. Quickly close off the drain-port or fuel-line, pump the primer a few more times (to increase line pressure and try to start your vehicle. After it starts, check for leaks. Renault kangoo hard to start , then runs fine . Needs to be hand primed every morning , runs fine all day then needs to be primed again every morn
this is an indication of a loose fuel fitting or a faulty valve in the system. Check that the filter is tight and sealing properly--check all lines are tight and not cracked or broken,. Check that the hand primer is in good condition and if a pump with rod is pushed all the way in and screwed up tight. The problem is a slow leak in the line allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank

you got it in one, you have an air leak, it may be a seal on your fuel filter (you can over tighten them and damage the seal) a cracked fuel line, my toyota had a bad valve in the lift pump and that allowed fuel to drain back to tank, fun times ahead, all you can do to start is look for leaks

well there is no fuel pump primer that i know of. When you turn the key you should hear the pump
come on. If you do then you should hear a medium high pitch sound. If you hear something other than that you got a block in your line. O one there thing you can try if you hear the pump\primer come on is take the fuel line off that is suppling the intake and see if your getting fuel from the tank
to your engine. If you don't then you need to blow out your line and filter with a air compresser, but do it carefuly. You dont want to mess up your filter or your lines ok. I hope this works for you.

Even though your vehicle starts and runs but dies, Your fuel pressure doesnt seem to be pushing enough pressure. It could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Air in fuel line?
get a container with fuel(about 4 liters will do). put a hose from the Primer to the fuel container and another hose from the injection pump return line to the container. if it works fine then the air leak is between the tank and the primer.

my daihatsu 4 trak has an intermittent starting fault, When the key is turned and ignition lights appear , I wait for the 2 clicks that come from underneath the bonnet and it starts,When i turn key to same position and only hear 1 click it does not turn engine over, I assume starter ok and suspect a relay at fault.
