I can't get the shift to recognize park the release the key. The car stays basically on until I can finally work it out by turning the car on/off and shifting the gears from park to reverse and back again.I can't get the shift to recognize park the release the key. If what your saying is that the shifter will not move into reverse or park, it's a hang-up in your shifter and linkage.
If your saying, when put into reverse, the transmission does nothing, Then you have a trans problem. If the shifter will move to park position and it won't connect the pawl to the stop, that most likely is only adjustment of the shifter cable/linkage. Since you have the other forward gears, I doubt very much it's a problem needing a rebuild.
well a number of things could be wrong with this, first check the fluid levels to insure that there is fluid in your transmision, next check to ensure that the shifting bar from the gear shifter is connected to the gear box controler, normally it is a bar that goes down by the steering colume, try getting a person in the driver seat and moving the gear seletor and make sure everything is moving that looks like it should, if a monting brace for this is broken it won't work
Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .
