Transmision doesn't shift

  • Anonymous Sep 05, 2012

if i put the van in Drive it starts of slugishly, cause its in to high of a gear. Once I hit 25mph it accelerates normally but up around 50mph you can tell it should be shifting into a higher gear and it doesn't. It just winds out at about 4k rpms.

Hi Steve, Gearbox's in newer vehicles are usually computer controlled. Your best course of action will be to take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and that will pin point the problem for you. The shift sensing is carried out inside the box in the unit named the valve body. It is so named because it contains most of the operating valves for change up and down. These are usually pressure operated and sometimes the operation will be over ridden by the electronics. The electronic management is governed by the speed of the engine and the ground speed of the vehicle. These are measured in comparison with each other and the gear change controlled electronically. If you have a problem with the speedo or rev counter in your vehicle, that could account for your problem. If the ABS light is showing constantly, that could also be a reason for the mal function. The speed sensors on modern vehicles often share duties (to cut down on cost of manufacture) and consequently a defect in something seemingly unconnected could be related to the fault you are experiencing. I hope the problem is something simple as I've described, but it can be a problem in the gear box. Lets hope for the best. Regards John

Also when starting the vehicle there are times that I need to jiggle the shift lever to turn it over like there is an gear misaligned or something. I thought the hesetation might be fluid levels so I had the trany flushed and refreshed. I'll take it to get the diognostic done. Thank you for your response John I appreciate it.

SOURCE: 2003 Mazda Tribute manual tranny shift lever loose

The cable from the shift box inside the vehicle to the transmission was disconnected from the shaft on the transmission.  The spring clip was not positioned correctly and the minus 18 degree temperature/thick transmission oil required a lot of force to shift.  As a result the cable slipped off.

SOURCE: I have 1998 Mazda 626

That is a story which I did not believe when I first heard it. Mazda transmissions can get to 50,000 fairly well but rarely 100,000 so they lowered their drive train mileage warranty to get out of putting so many new transmissions in at their cost. Instead of making better transmissions, just lower the warranty mileage and let the customer foot the bill. I read about it in consumer reports, you may start looking there or just google it. I assume this problem is only for automatics.

SOURCE: My 5 speed 2004 Mazda

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Since it's a 2004 I doubt that the gearbox is faulty, it's too early for it to get be worn out so you can leave the gearbox issue. I do suspect that you have a faulty clutch lining. If they are worn out this issues occur. I strongly suggest that you replace the clutch lining, release bearing and pressure plate. Once replaced you'll be good.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

SOURCE: My check engine light came

suggest that you check your transmission fluid post haste please. you may only need to add transmission fluid to your car. also,if you have to add the fluid, where did your fluid leak? check for leaks under your car when parked. you may need transmission fluid and filter change, suggest that you do this with new filter and add lucas transmission treatment to the fluid change also. you'll need to purchase this yourself, unless you have a mechanic in the family that can do it for you.if not i suggest you find a mechanic you trust, then tell him,or,her to add this to your tranny fluid change. also suggest while the mechanics there at the transmission to check the modulator valve on the transmission, and the vacum line that operates it. just a hint. thanks for choosing fixya.com

97 aerostar transmisson problem

I had trouble with what seemed like a transmission on my ford van. Was told by a master mechanic to disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable for 5 minutes to reset computer. I did this, it worked & never had another problem with it. Maybe it will work in your situation. Doesn't cost anything to try!:)

Doesn't seem to be shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

It sounds like a transmission valve is sticking. Try getting some seafoam for transmissions. It should be available at any auto parts store. They will probably even put it in for you.

Transmission does not shift automatically, only manually. Swap in a known-good PCM, check wiring, check other sensors such as VSS and TPS.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmision is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Good luck and get back to me, hope this helps.
