I have 1998 GMC k1500, I took it in for Smog test in California,

The truck failed the test, here are the results @ idle RPM 631, co2 14.7, O2 0.1, HC ppm 396, CO% .50 @ 2500 RPM 2482, co2 15.1, O2 0.0, HC ppm 11, CO% .01 the truck was listed as a gross polluter, the fuel cap failed funtional test and the check engine light came on in the middle of the test. fault code po306 misfire detected cylinder #6 the truck does have a miss at idle when I took it in for the test, I replaced plugs with Ac/ Delco iridiem plugs new wires, new Rotor and new distrributor cap, and a new PVc valve, and new gas cap. the truck still has a miss at idle but seems to run great at hwy speeds Milage is 155,000, Anyone have suggestions as to whats causing the miss and what else I might need to change to get my truck back on the road.

I replaced plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, pvc. the truck is not losing water or antifreeze, it doesnt smoke while running or starting. I guess next step compression check. but wondering about map sensor or 02 sensor.

possible but i was thinking compresion as well thats why i thought head gasket

It was a stuck valve, I replaced the motor, issue is fixed, I did see the value in just doing a valve job for a motor that had a150,000 miles on it.

if your o2 sensor is reading too lean then you have a vacume leak spray brake cleaner on all your vacume hoses one at a time if nothing then spray it around your intake manifold gasket they are usually the culprit

1984 Fleetwood Pace arrow eleganza has high HC

The easiest way to reduce HC at idle is to retard the timing a few degrees. You might have to increase the base idle and you will notice power loss, but the settings can be returned once vehicle passes inspection.

1989 cheverolet s 10 pick up 4.3 litre v-6, failed smog hc too high

About the only thing you can do is take it to a qualified DEQ specialist and have them take a look at it. It might be something as simple as a hose, or not.

My 1997 Honda Civic failed it's Emissions Test. See below the ASM Emission Test Results. What do you suggest I do to get the car to pass the smog test? ASM Emission Test Results: 15mph - RPM = 1587...

Jose, I don't know if this will give you the answer you are looking for because there are many things to consider here. The exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) is one of the main things involved in reducing NO emissions. This valve is controled by the power control module. (PCM) This is your vehicles computer. The PCM monitors the vehicles speed and will command the EGR to open when the vehicle attains a certain speed, which is why the ASM test being done is recorded at two different speeds. At 25 MPH your vehicle failed the hydrocarbon (HC) emissions limit and this could be for a number of reasons. When is the last time you car was tuned up? Old spark plugs, wires, clogged air filters, oxygen sensors, leaking injectors (personal experience) or the PCV valve could be contributing to the results of the test. I guess that the easiest way to go is to tune up the engine replacing the spark plugs, wires, air filter and the PCV valve and don't forget to have the oil changed at the same time. Only then should have the vehicle retested and see what the results are. Should it fail again you may have to consider having the EGR or the catalytic converter replaced depending on what portion of the test fails. If the NO fails I would consider the EGR. If the HC fails then I would consider the catalytic converter. Good luck with this.

Failed smog check

How well does the vehicle run?

Assuming that the engine did pass the EGR function test on the emission test results, and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) or check engine light is not on when the engine is running, and if you are not sure when the last time it was that the engine had a complete tune-up, with distributor cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, air and fuel filters, then a complete tune-up would certainly help, and if the engine oil and oil filter have not been changed in a while, then they should also be changed before an emission test because long used engine oil traps carbon and it will show up as higher CO on the emission test because the emission analyzer will be able detect the higher CO from the engine oil through the PCV valve.

However, it would seem from those HC readings that there is a vacuum leak, and carefully inspect all of the vacuum lines for any cracks or damage, (especially the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator) because cracks in the vacuum lines seem to like to hide underneath the lines.

The emission label under the hood should have the vacuum line routing diagram printed on it, and the vacuum lines should all be checked to be certain that they are all connected correctly.

Here is the firing order diagram for that vehicle to help assist you tune-up the vehicle.

1990 toyota camry 4 cyl fails HC part of CA smog test in idle. Also idle varies by 200-300 rpm and when driving the power really surges close to 3600 rpm. Could it be an O2 sensor?

try using 93 octane with some octane boost. get the good octane boost that cost about 7 or 8 dollars. Fill her up .drive her for about 200 miles so the octane boost can clean

Failed Smog Test Close to CA-HC Limits

You can try some over the counter solutions per say. Some of the mechanics in a bottle. They sell some products This will probably be the cheapest router. If this doesn't work then you need repairs.

Pass your emissions test.

High hc

you may need replace the catalytic converter, but 1st do this, clean the throttle body and idle airbypass valve, change the oil before the retest as well, get it as hot as you can before the test, hold it at a high idle prior to the test, this may squeak you by, as a 20 year smog tech these are the thing I did, if all else fails do the cat conv.
