SOURCE: Strong gas odor near drivers side rear tire, no leaks no codes

You'll need to look for a liquid fuel leak, or a damaged vent hose.
Is the check engine light on ?

look under the hood while vehicle is running, this will be the easiest way to find it. it may be something as simple as a dry rotted rubber fuel line.

I would have someone check under the front of car while engine was running. Maybe then a gas leak could be spotted. Did he check the charcoal canister-it's a gas vapor collector from the gas tank, and maybe located at front of car. If the canister is full and not working to purge the canister and send the collected fuel and vapors into the engine, it might be what you are smelling.

No service engine light? A loose gas cap will set a light.
You may want to inspect your fuel filler neck and anything close. For a long while its not uncommon for a person to report the fuel odor issue and have it be where some low life cut a filler neck or puntured a tank to steal fuel. But if that were the case there would usually be a service engine or gas cap light as the systems now days monitor pressures so they can detect leaks in the Evap system.

When you mention a smell though under the hood, do you think the smell could be exhaust? I have seen those manifolds crack. or maybe just a leak from a gasket or exhaust donut.

Odor / smell

If it is putrid meat

Look under your car for roadkill , or for that matter under the hood

Has an animal crawled into the muffler area for warmth and has either died there or been killed when you started up

If it is a fishy smell

I dont suppose that you have upset someone and they have tied a piece of fish to the muffler

A very old way of extracting revenge

It has a very strong gas smell when idling and after you turn it off.

Look under the car to see if you have any gasoline on the ground. If the odor is that strong, I would not recommend driving the car until you find the leak. Try to locate the area of the car were the smell is strongest, rear of the car, center or front under hood.
Carefully check all fuel lines with a flashlight and feel for any wet spots.
Good luck,
Let me know.

2005 Chevy Impala exhaust smell

neither one of these would cause gas to leak. sure it is not coolant ? if you think it is gas it is not safe to drive car as it could catch on fire. possible cause would be a leaking injector.

Gas odor when at stops sign or parking in garage

I recently had the same problem. It turned out that the fuel regulator on the engine at the left side just above the intake manifold had an intermitent leak. The gas leaking was not always visible so I had the regulator changed and that solved the problem.
