I just bought my 1997 subaru legacy gt, it was fine until yesterday after I drove on the highway, the car overheat really bad. So I have the thermostat changed, the radiator cap change but doesn't do anything. It drive good for about 5 miles and right after that the temperature started to go up. The fan is on and I am pretty sure it's not the head gasket. I really want to know what's wrong with it. Thank you.
Sorry if this might break your heart. I have '98 Outback which is the same 1st generation DOHC 2.5 engine. These are common head gasket problem (I'd say 100% of every engine sooner or later) once you have had your car overheated.
You will not get this comfirmed by just have your mech check the compression on the cylinder because we call it phantom leak (internal leak which can be confirmed with hydrocarbon in coolant). And then you will end up replace every other thing before you could reach the source of problem.
Other signs of this issue are as following: random overheating after freeway or uphills drive, bubbles in coolant overflow tank, oil residue in coolant overflow tank, bubble nioses from the a/c vent.
You're looking at $1000-1500 repair by independent mech as they have to pull engine out to fix the problem. I had mine fixed two weeks ago and now my baby is running like a champ.

If the car does not overheat when idling and only overheats at high speeds replace the radiator it is blocked flush cooling system if the radiator looks good externally have it cleaned and ask for a report how what % was blocked

My 97 Sub. Leggy GT overheats as well. I've changed out the thermostat and caps as well. Now the next thing is the radiator. I'm sure hopin thats is it. lol.
its the headgasket. the exhaust from the engine gets through the gasket and "airlocks" the coolent so the antifreeze or {water} dosent circulate.
i changed the rad the thor the presure is coming from the 4inch hose that feeds the block steam comes from the bleeder not sure what the problem is
