Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

1997 Camry Won't shift into overdrive

My 97 Camry won't shift into Overdrive. This problem started suddenly, after checking the transmission fluids, and coolant. I am still seeing issues with it shifting into OD.

Thnaks for the response back, Carol.

I am rather certain that your issue will be fixed by the replacement of your thermostat. Why?
You have stated the the temp gauge is lower than half at times...this leads me to believe that your thermostat is sticking open slightly...The science here is the fact that the OD is prevented from activating until the coolant temperature reaches 177 degrees F. This is controlled by the temperature sensor in the cooling system, and is part of the emissions package. It is not adjustable. The OD is prevented when the coolant is below 177 to reduce possible hydrocarbon spikes (emissions) at the tailpipe. In short, cool engine temps lead to high emissions, especially when the vehicle has engaged OD. Replace the thermostat, and you might as well replace the coolant at the same time. I am pretty sure this will cure your issue. The graciousness of a FixYa rating would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for choosing FixYa!

SOURCE: how to use the overdrive on the auto.transmission.

the overdrive button on your automatic transmission is for cruising on the highway basically like having another gear for better economy careful not to use it when your not on the highway because lugging the car in overdrive when its not needed will cause higher fuel consumption other than that you should have no problems just get out on the highway and push and away you go

SOURCE: Won't shift onto overdrive until engine warms up.

That's actually a feature, not a problem. The emissions control system will not let it go into OD until it's warmed up.

If your truck warms up in a normal amount of time, then you're all set.

Last year, my 4Runner started taking too long to warm up, so it wouldn't go into OD for a long time. In my case, it was that the thermostat was stuck open, so coolant was flowing freely even when the engine was still cold. Replacing the thermostat was quick and easy, and it's good as new again.

SOURCE: takes a long time to shift into overdrive

sounds like the toque converter is locking and unlocking have the trans serviced and flushed if this does not cure the problem then you could be looking at a trans rebuild or replacement.Check the fluid first could just be low.

97 town car not shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

Check the Coolant (antifreeze) level. My 94 continental has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd when the level is low. Also, this may indicate that the transmission fluid is too old to work properly. The transmission fluid is cooled at the bottom of the radiator, since cool fluid works better than hot fluid (especially when the trans fluid is old) that could make the transmission not shift properly. Keep the coolant level up until you can have the trans fluid checked.

Transmission problem with 97 camry

The 97 has an allen head(14mm?) drain plug on the pan. Drain the fluid and
exaimine it in a clear container. Good transmission fluid smells like new ATF and is usually red. If yours is dark and smells burnt AND/OR HAS DEBRIS IN IT which I think is likely, you will need a new ******.

1994 Ford Taurus 3.8l suddenly lost overdrive and does not shift down into lower gears correctly. Does this necessarily mean that the transmission is shot or are there other possibly less costly issues...

You can try changing the transmission fluid and filter, sometimes dirty filter/broken down and dirty fluid can cause shifting problems. (I assume you checked to see if it had enough transmission fluid?)

Transmission will not shift into overdrive sometimes, mostly when cold. After engine is warm, it will shift. It started doing this after i cahneged the transmission fluid and filter to Royal Purple

Overdrive is electrically controlled by the pcm. When it's cold you need to check to see if the pcm is grounding the overdrive solenoid. If it is the solenoid might be bad or if the pcm is not grounding it then you need to check items that would cause the pcm to lock out overdrive. Coolant temp, TPS, Vehicle speed sensor, ECT. You will have to have it scanned to do this.
