Tapping noise
First check your oil, and change it if necessary. Low oil will cause the lifters to tap. I wouild recommend adding some high milage oil treatment, like Slick 50. If your oil is good and full, the lifters may be damaged. You can take a quart of transmission fluid or diesel fuel to the gasoline. It will cause it to smoke a little but it may free up sticky lifters. If that doesn't work, you probably have damage to your lifters.

My strong guess without looking at it would be a cracked exhaust manifold, when it gets hot the metal expands an it doesn't leak.

it sounds like your timing chain needs replacing. Better get it seem to quick in case of trouble if it breaks.
SOURCE: my valves are making a tapping noise do i need to adj. valves
Before adjusting the valves, 1. check the oil level 2. use an engine cleaner that you add to the oil (berryman's or equivalent) and run thru the engine for 30 minutes 3. change oil and filter 4 run and check for tappet noise. This may improve things without opening things up.
