Left brake lite doesn't work AND the tail lite goes off

Brake lights work when headlites off. With head and tail lights on, applying the brakes turns off the left taillight. The center and right brake lights work fine. The left turn signal works well with headlites on or off, and with the brakes applied. The bulbs have been replaced with the correct 2057. It's a 1996 Deville. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Ahunley, Sounds like you have cross the connection wires to the unit ( positive to earth & earth to positive) Try swapping the connectors over.

Hope this works.
kind regards
David

SOURCE: right and left brake lights

Hi,
check the brake light switch located in the brake pedal area. Normal procedure is to remove the two wires and connect a jumper' wire between them, check and see if the rear brake lights operate. Check the brake light switch and see if it is adjustable. If so, re-connect the removed wires, adjust the position of the switch untill the brake lights operate, when the brake pedal is depressed, then secure the brake light switch.

SOURCE: Hello, I have a 97

Now remove the bulb & put your volt meter to the
center socket contact & ground your blk lead.

See if you get 12.6 volt back to the socket
If not, then you have a voltage drop before the socket

I hate to suggest a wiring diagram, as your doing good
so far,BUT you may need one, after you get dirty under the
car some more following the wiring

Tail light works but goes off when rear brake is applied on my 98 kawasaki vulcan 800

you are missing a ground wire
what is happening is when you have the tail light on it is grounding out through the brake light so that when the brake is applied the current is stopping that taillight working by pushing current back through the bulb
the same principle that puts out the charge light when the alternator starts working

1982 GMC 4x4. Left blinker works until brake is applied then brake light goes out as well.

You may have a ground problem? The ground wire is black, you could try a redundant ground, see if it helps? You could also use a test lite and check voltage at applicable lamp, with turn or brake lites on. Your lower brake lites and turn signals should use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. If I'm correct, your lower brake lites are wired through the turn signal switch, voltage.

I have a 1987 Chevy r10 truck the right tail light went out so I replaced it with the reverse light just so I can go to the store and get a new one and after replacing it the left brake light stop working ...

Your turn and brake lite use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. I'm talking about lower brake lites in case you have a high mount brake lite, I don't think you do.
So if the turn signal on that side works ok, the wiring circuit and ground should be ok. The lower brake lite is wired through turn signal switch. The voltage wire for your brake lite is yellow, use a test lite to check for voltage with brake activated.

I have a 2005 GMC Envoy. Have tail lites but no brake lites. Third lite on top works whet brakes applied

Since the high mounted brake light works you know that the brake light switch is working. Now you need to check the brake light bulbs in the rear tail light assemblies. The brake lights are separate from the tail light (parking or running lights). There are two screws that hold the rear light assemblies in place.

Rear tailight , top, goes off when I press the

This sounds very much like a grounding problem on your lamp cluster, some times a cluster of lamps use a common ground ( negative wire). Also some cars use the car body as the ground connection. I think the reason the tail light works when the brake light is off is because the tail light is grounded through the brake light bulb. Check the bulb holder and the ground connection.

If you have no dash lites< I would suggest checking either of the following as thse are the most common problems 1) chec your fuses 2) test the headlite switch, as for the brake lites I would again check the fuses and then move on to the brake lite switch and see if there is power going into the switch and coming out of the switch with the brake pedal depressed, if not it's the switch if there is power trace the wire back to the brake lites checking all connections in between for power. Finally test the lite pig tail ( socket ). Good luck and rember to rate all the solutions that you get on FixYa, thanx

1990 Volvo DL Sedan Brake Lites Work but Also Come on With Running Lites

Is there a switch on the left side of the dash that has a red lens and a wavy line across it? If so, you have a rear fog light switch and it has been activated, causing your brake lights to come on each time you turn your headlights on. Flip the switch and the rear lights should display only the parking lights with the headlights on.
