I have replaced the battery. Have been to 2 dealership service centers. The last confirmed a draw on the battery, Toyota suggested I lock the car with the remote key which shuts down the system when not in use. Left the car parked for 3 days, locked, heard a strange sound coming from the engine opened the hood and the sound was coming from a small round part that sets between the radiator and the inside of the grill. Tried to start car battery dead.
SOURCE: Significant engine damage from oil change
Thank you for asking my assistance. I will try my best to help you.
I have been in the Toyota biz for the last 14 years, and, unfortunatly, have not ever heard of this issue. That being said, I do have connections in the engineering dept at Toyota, and on Monday, I will call out to the west coast and inquire further for you.
Now, to the issue at hand: The shield that was bent down is secured very well to the underside of the valve cover. To bend that device, I can only guess that when the oil was being put into the engine via an oil pump, the nozzle of the pump was *** jammed *** down onto the shield, and broke it loose from the internal retainers under the valve cover, and contacted the cam; this is very possible...I agree with the statement that your SM provided, however, further engine damage? Removal of the oil pan would be in order, to determine if any more pieces are there. Doubt it, though.
And, to answer your last question, the responsibility of the cause for failure is your oil change guy.
He bent/broke the shield, and caused your problem. I hope this has helped, if you have any other comments or questions, please feel free to repost.

Hi, Contact your dealer and get instructions for reprogramming your remotes. When a security system loses power for an extended amount of time the programming for the remotes are lost.

Auto-lock on the doors is the default setting. You dealer should be able to change this setting for you. If your current dealership cannot, then take it to another, presumably better, dealership.
SOURCE: 2008 Toyota Avalon Battery Problem
I doubt this is a smart key problem, the key uses a chip and its own battery. Something in the car is causing a drain, a light is staying on possibly. Trunk light, glove box light, under hood light... maybe you have a portable GPS unit plugging into the auxilary port? Just a thought. This is not a common problem that has been reported by Avalon owners as of yet.

I would have them check the starter, Must be drawing a small amount of power even when the key is off...I have seen a few vehicles do this...
