I put a replacement radio in a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme radio makes noise in right rear speaker when tuning in station.

I replaced o.e. radio with a Sony Compact Disc Player the disc plays good but when you go to a station the right rear speaker makes a popping noise. The car has four speakers.

Hi JPLP, A popping or 'motor boating' sound is usually a sign that one of the transistors is defective. As it happens only when tuning in the radio it is possibly in the pre amp stage. Regards John

When you say tried different radio and it didn't work, does this mean the tuner acts like it is functioning, but you hear nothing out of the speakers?

If so, this stinks of a bad ANTENNA...

It is not an extremely difficult job. time consuming consuming... I've done a 3.4 intake manifold job, which in my opinion (plenty will disagree) is a little easier than a 3.1 manifold. there are just more steps involved with the 3.1 intake.(I haven't had to change the intake gasket on my 3.1 (yet)) If you haven't already, invest in a haynes or chilton manual, whip out your sockets and your gasket remover, and prepare to do battle...
oh, as far as how to tell before you break down the engine... are you having any drive ability problems? Surging idle, stalling... try this, take propane torch (DONT LIGHT IT) but open the valve and let the spray the propane around your intake manifold with the engine running. If the idle drops or the car stalls, there is your intake leak. That trick also works with intake cleaner too.

you may have to remove your push rods to put your new gasket on. Just loosen the rocker arm nuts/bolts and pivot your rocker arms out of the way. If you do remove your push rods, push them into some holes in a cardboard box so that you can replace them EXACTLY in the same position that you got them from. To remove old traces of gasket, you may have to get some spray on gasket remover, let it sit 5 min. then get at it with your scraper. (be careful, remember our engines are aluminum, you don't want to scrape too hard and scar the mating surface).  
After you get all the old gasket off, clean the mating surface with intake cleaner or lacquer thinner. your gasket kit may have come with end seals. if it did not, remember to run a line of RTV sealant on the front and rear ridges of the engine block between the heads (before you install the intake gasket.)

When you re-install your lower manifold, coat your bolts with pipe thread sealant. when you install the lower manifold, tighten the vertical bolts first, then the angle bolts- it will keep the manifold from wiggling around on the gasket.

After you get everything back together and all snug, i would buy some GM top engine cleaner (liquid)(dealer only( part# 1050002) or some sea foam from your local parts retailer. I know this is to clean the carbon and sludge from your intake and your cylinders, but guess where the remainder of the solution ends up? Yep, in your oil. That should clean up any residue you had from the milkshake effect.

To use the GM engine cleaner, just disconnect your favorite vacuum hose leading to the intake (some people just use their brake booster hose) and put it down in the bottle of liquid while the car is running. (don't let the vacuum **** the liquid too fast, you don't want to risk problems. you may have to keep your hand on the throttle to keep it running. when the can is empty, let your car stall or just cut it off. 

Let your car sit about 2 hours, to give the cleaner time to really work. Start your car, let it run for about 20 mins (there will be PLENTY of white smoke, your car is burning off the cleaner and the carbon).

Then change your oil. good luck and hope this helps.

Ok, you're going to need to buy, borrow, or rent a torque wrench. For 3.1 engines 1995 and earlier, rocker arm nuts should be torqued to 18 ft-lbs.

The wire brush probably did less damage than I do on a regular basis with a gasket scraper :D so you should be okay. If you've already drained your oil, (which I suspect you have) then I would just use the wal-mart brand while you do the GM engine cleaner thing. 
  Don't add the cleaner to your oil, just let a vacuum hose, **** it into the intake. Plenty will get in your oil. Getting into your oil and cleaning up the gook is just a fringe benefit. What the cleaner actually does is it cleans up your entire intake path (manifold, injectors, & valves)... I think you'll be happy with the throtle crispness, once you're done with the engine cleaner. 
Oh and for your coolant system, just get some Prestone radiator flush, and follow what the bottle says. If your system is really gooped up, Prestone also has a Super flush for a little extra :2cents:

My radio/ 6 disc CD player.


Both. Check the power line that is supposed to power the clock and memory circuits when you turn off the ignition.

And your player has lost the ability of the laser to focus on the disc - hence the error message.

What is the traffic button for in a 2002 alero

TRAF (Traffic): Press this button to receive traffic announcements. The traffic announcement brackets will appear on the display. TRAF will appear on the display if the current station broadcasts traffic announcements. If the current station does not broadcast traffic announcements, the radio will seek to a station that does. When the radio finds a station that broadcasts traffic announcements, it will stop. If no station is found, NO TRAFFIC will appear on the display. When a traffic announcement comes on the current radio station or a related network station, you will hear it, even if the volume is muted or a compact disc is playing. If the compact disc player was being used, the compact disc will stay in the player and resume play at the point where it stopped. INFO (Information): If the current station has a message, INFO will appear on the display. Press this button to see the message. If the whole message does not appear on the display, parts of the message will appear every three seconds until the message is completed. To see the parts of the message faster than every three seconds, press this button again. A new group of words will appear on the display. Once the complete message has been displayed, INFO will disappear from the display until another new message is received. Hope this helps.

check your fuses first. You may have blown one.

Cd player is not reading cds what can i do to repair it.


Subject: Radio With Six Disc CD Changer Does Not Recognize Loaded CD And Displays An "INITIALIZING" Message, CD Will Not Play, CD Cannot Be Ejected, Or Disc Icon Does Not Illuminate (Reprogram Radio)

Condition
Some customers may comment on any of the following conditions:
• The CD loaded in the radio will not play.
• The CD loaded in the radio will not eject.
• The disc icon on the radio will not illuminate.
• The radio displays an "INITIALIZING" message for approximately 30 seconds after vehicle start up.
Important: Do not attempt to play CDs with paper labels on them in this CD player. The labels may warp or wrinkle and jam the CD player mechanism. Refer to the Compact Disc Care and Cleaning procedure (Document ID# 1656123) in SI for more information.
Technicians are to reprogram the radio with new operating software using the following procedure:
1. If the radio has a CD(s)2008 General will be necessary to reset the radio and remove them
before the radio is reprogrammed. Remove and reinstall the radio fuse to reset the radio and then eject the CD(s). If cycling the power to the radio does not allow the CD(s) to be removed, the radio may have another failure that will not be corrected by the reprogramming procedure that follows. Refer to the Diagnostic Starting Point - Entertainment procedure in SI to begin your diagnosis of this failure to eject CDs concern before reprogramming the radio.
2. Reprogram the radio using the Service Programming System (SPS) with the latest software available on TIS2WEB. Refer to the SPS procedures and the Radio Programming and Set procedure in SI for more information. As always make sure your Tech 2® is updated with the latest software version.
3. Verify proper operation of the radio and make sure that all CDs can be ejected.

Disconnecting/Connecting The Battery

Always stop the engine before disconnecting the battery negative lead and make sure the battery positive lead is isolated i.e. wrapped in a suitable cloth.

WARNING: Radio code saving devices must not be used when conducting work on air bag or fuel systems. It must be noted that, when using these devices, the vehicle electrical system is still live albeit with a reduced current flow.

NOTE: Before disconnecting the battery make sure that the radio receiver/cassette player/mini disc player and compact disc player keycodes are known and, that no data is required from the powertrain control module as battery disconnection will erase any fault codes and idle/drive values held in the Keep Alive Memory (KAM). It is not necessary to disconnect or remove electronic control modules.

Always disconnect the battery before commencing repair operations which require:
  • The vehicle to be jacked up
  • Work on the engine
  • Work underneath the vehicle
  • Arc welding
Alternatively a Radio Code Saver may be used. With the battery disconnected, a Radio Code Saver will allow sufficient current to pass to maintain the radio receiver/cassette player/mini disc player and compact disc player memory, operate the clock and supply the door operated interior lights while isolating the battery in the event of a short circuit.

Reconnecting the Battery

WARNING: If the battery has been on bench charge the cells may be giving off explosive hydrogen gas. Avoid creating sparks, and if in doubt cover the vent plugs or covers with a damp cloth.

Always make sure that all electrical systems are switched OFF before reconnecting the battery to avoid causing sparks or damage to sensitive electrical equipment.

Always reconnect the battery positive lead first and the negative last, ensuring that there is a good electrical contact and the battery terminals are secure.

Restart the clock (where fitted) and set it to the correct time.

Re-enter the radio receiver/cassette player/mini disc player and compact disc player keycodes and preset' frequencies, if known.

Following reconnection of the battery, the engine should be allowed to idle until it has reached normal operating temperature as the stored idle and drive values contained within the powertrain control module have been lost. Allow the vehicle to idle for a further three minutes . Drive the vehicle at constant speeds of approximately 48 km/h (30 mph), 64 km/h (40 mph), 80 km/h (50 mph), 96 km/h (60 mph) and 112 km/h (70 mph) for three minutes each. This may cause a driveability concern if the procedure is not carried out. This will allow the powertrain control module to relearn idle values.

Section 15-00: Audio Systems—Service 1999 Taurus, Sable Workshop Manual DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING Inspection and Verification NOTE: Many customers do not understand the limitations of FM reception. Refer the customer to the Owner Guide for information about the limitations of FM radio performance.

Internal diagnostic examination of the integrated control panel, rear chassis unit and audio compact disc player should be left to the authorized radio service center. However, the automotive technician should be able to analyze and isolate radio reception conditions to the proper area or component causing the condition. All radio conditions can be isolated to one of six general areas:
  • antenna system
  • integrated control unit
  • radio speaker system
  • radio noise suppression equipment
  • rear chassis unit
  • audio communications protocol network
Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
Using Audio System On-Board Diagnostics
The audio system has on-board diagnostic capabilities and is equipped to check for every component available in the system even if this specific vehicle is not equipped with all components. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set for the missing components. These DTCs can be ignored if the vehicle is not equipped with these components. The battery must be fully charged for proper audio system operation. The ignition switch must be in the RUN or ACC position. Turn the system on, tune in a strong AM station and verify good reception. After an AM station is checked, tune in a strong FM station. The system is now ready to enter the diagnostic mode. Diagnostic Mode:
NOTE: Battery must be fully charged for proper audio system operation and self-test.

Enter Diagnostics mode by pressing SEEK DOWN button first and then pre-set button 3. Hold both buttons for five seconds. This will suspend all normal radio functions, retain the previously selected frequency and display DIAG.
  1. NOTE: To perform diagnostics, press the appropriate buttons as instructed.

    SYSTEM CONFIGURATION SELF-TEST:
    Press pre-set button 1. This will check for connection of all possible devices and log the diagnostic trouble codes for any device that does not respond. The display will flash SELF while gathering the diagnostic trouble codes, then stop flashing when complete. To exit System Configuration Self-test, press pre-set button 1 again. To retrieve diagnostic trouble codes, press the TUNE UP button. This will display the diagnostic trouble codes if any exist. Continued pressing of the TUNE UP button will display the next diagnostic trouble code. Record codes and refer to the following table. To exit the Retrieval Mode, press pre-set button 1.


    CONFIGURATION SELF-TEST CODES Code Description 0 No diagnostic trouble codes logged 1 No response from rear chassis unit 2 No response from tape deck 3 No response from bezel microprocessor 4 No response from compact disc player 5 No response from steering wheel controls 6 No response from rear seat control 7 No response from remote climate control 8 No response from navigation module 9 Read Only Memory verification failed
    Remember, system configuration will test for all possible equipment connections. Inspect the vehicle to determine actual equipment installed.
  1. Integrated control panel display test:
    To enter the integrated control panel display test, press pre-set button 5. This check will light all segments in the integrated control panel. The system will automatically exit this test after five seconds.
  1. Integrated control panel and rear chassis unit identification:
    To enter this test, press pre-set button 3. This test identifies the software level of the integrated control panel and rear chassis unit. The integrated control panel is tested first, followed by the rear chassis unit. The completed test will exit automatically. For code identification, refer to the following table. The display will have two sequences of five codes each. The first sequence is for the integrated control panel, the second sequence is for the rear chassis unit.

Removal
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove the instrument panel finish panel (044D70). Refer to Section 01-12 for the removal procedure.
  1. Insert the Radio Removing Tool T87P-19061-A into the face plate holes until the tension of the tool locking into place can be felt. (There are tension clips that this tool pushes out of the way so the radio can pull out. Maybe you can insert 4 pins that will do the same thing.)
  1. Flex outward on both sides of the radio chassis (18806) simultaneously and pull the radio chassis from the instrument panel (04320) using the tool as handles.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the radio antenna lead in cable (18812) from the radio chassis.

the whole bezel around radio and shifter should be silver. it pops out the heater controls stay on bezel. shifter will need to be moved into low pop top loose and work done it is just clipped in. there are 4 7mm bolts holding radio in
