When you start the car for the first time for the day the idling runs high and low sometimes shuts off but once it warms up it its fine
Sounds like low compression at start up do to piston slap and not alowing car to warm up over the years before driving off. 3.1, 3.4, 3.5 motor pistons are exact size at operating temp there for cold temps at start up cause the pistons to slap the cylinder wall.. Gm engineers did this to reduce operating temp while driving by lowering friction in the cylinder. problem is most people these days start there cars and take off down the road..my suggesting would be to check piston compersion at operating temp and see if it meets spefications for ur mottor before replacing any other parts...

sounds like the idle air control motor is sticking , not sure what engine you have 3.4 litre ?? also you can ck the throttle plate right on top where the throttle cable bracket assembly part of that bracket holds down a vaccum line that has a rubber gromnet that after time leaks causing idle surge , hope this helps
SOURCE: have to hit starter 2-3
When you say you have to "hit" the starter, do you mean literally? If so, then you need to replace your starter. I've had several cars where the starter went out and if you bang on the starter it will usually start up. That wouldn't have anything to do with your fuel pump or idle sensor. Replace your starter.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

if u checked the codes and it showed that a o2 sensor is bad make sure ur on the rite one as in {sensor 1 bank1 or sensor1 bank 2} when u change a sensor always make sure u got the rite one.
hope this helps
