Engine light seems to be coming on right after I fill my gas tank. As the gas dwindles down, it goes off. Ran a test and got P0340. Camshaft position sensor bank 1. Found that the gas cap was bad (not sealing) and got a new one. The light went off immediately. Got gas, it came back on. We cleared out the code, I drove it for a few days and back on it is!!! Please help!!
On the 1.6 liter the value cover and upper timing cover need to be removed to replace the cam sensor. It will be mounted in between the two cam gears.

SOURCE: P0340 Code Camshaft Position Sensor
The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor detects the position of the camshaft in order to identifiy when piston No. 1 is on its compression stroke. The CMP sensor is used for ignition timing in the Ford DIS igntion system, but not in the EDIS igntion system. Both DIS/EDIS use the CMP signal for synchronizing the firing of sequential fuel injectors.
On the 3.0L vulcan engine, the CMP signal is generated by a single Hall-Effect magnetic switch, activated by a single "vane" spinning around by virture of a synchronized shaft which is driven by the camshaft.
The CMP sensor & synchronizer/shaft are located behind the intake manifold (i.e., back near the firewall on a Ranger) on the top of the cylinder block. If you just need to replace the sensor, it is a simple job of unplugging the electrical connector and removing the screws holding the sensor in place. Here is a sketch of the sensor to give you an idea what to look for:

i would not try the crank sensor just yet first off they **** to replace properly and you wont want to do that just yet, make sure it is the same code that has come back on as far as the banks are concerned on that enging the m52 the front 3 cly are bank 1 and the back 3 are bank 2, so unless it is talking about O2 sensors that is irrelivant, are you sure you replaced the correct sensor? it is the on in front on the engine with NO wire tail on it make sure it is plugged in correctly, this car is VERY good at knowing the difference between a cam sensor and a crank sensor the other guy does not know what he is talking about

please go the above link and you have a video procedure for how to change the sensor.
just do it and you are done to drive your car away.
SOURCE: Check Engine Light, Code p0340, triggered by other accessories?
i have the code p0340 come up on my 2000 dodge intrepid, the check engine light comes on, and my car sometimes will take a few tries to start, does that sound like the camshaft sensor? how positive are you if it is?

I think your sensors are pattern parts and the readings /resistances are not the same as the original parts ,try some bosch units is my first suggestion ,
