Your VSC system doesn't have anything to do with your gas cap, unfortunately. You're going to either need an OBD2 Scanner to read the messages for your check engine light or take it to a mechanic/dealership to read the code and reset that light. You can also go to Autozone if memory serves and borrow a scanner to see the codes. You can pick up scanners from amazon for 10-50 USD, or about 40 USD from Autozone. Your VSC system not working means that you're not going to have optimal stability while driving until you can get the system operational again. Note that since it's Toyota Proprietary, you will not be able to read the VSC codes with the scanner, just the standard check engine codes. If your vehicle's braking system still seems to work, it could be a sensor malfunction, but I would recommend you take your vehicle to a Toyota dealership (unfortunately) to see if they can find the fault. When the VSC and trac light comes on, Your vehicle enter a fail safe function the ECU rejects any open request from the VSC system and your vehicle operate regardless of ABS,TRAC, and VSC. Having it cleared without corrections will allow the light to come on. If the VSC is seeing a large over steer the VSC and trac light comes on.(even if its under steer).If the ABS ,Trac is correct you will need to seek zero calibration.This is done through the DLC connection in the hood.The easy way to reinitial lize steering angle is done by keeping steering wheel in the straight ahead position (driver window down) disconnect the negative battery, and reconnect , turn key on . The other way is to go to the engine and find the DLC again driver window rolled down steering wheel in the straight ahead position. do not shake the vehicle you must be on a true level ground. No heavy load in the vehicle and no entering the vehicle untill this is complete Turn the key on at this point you will do everything through the window you cannot enter the vehicle.in the hood where the DLC is at you will short pin Ts and CG with a paper clip 4 times repeatedly within 8 seconds. There the VSC will go to zero point.Turn key off (again turn ignition off through the window) make sure you remove the shorting out of Ts and CG. Now your done. For Rav4 use you DLC 3 its under the driver dash.As for the pin location its on the cover of the DLC 3

Your alternator has to produce at least 13.1 volts to recharge the battery. If less is produced then possible causes are alternator, wiring, fuse, drive belt. Your ABS and VSC modules will self protect and shut down when low voltage is detected. Repair the charging problem and the warning lights will be sorted too.

vsc(vehicle stability control) is usally part of the abs(anti lock brakes) could be as simple as a bad wheel speed sensor

Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether VSC will be effective in preventing a loss of control.

However, it appears Lexus owners who have reported this sort of problem did not have to do anything to fix except - things like .. uncap gas cap and put it back, remove battery leads for about 10 minutes and put back, tighten air filter hose ...all wierd.

Have you checked your owner's manual ?

Doubtful it's an intermittent electrical problem. Far more likely you've got a wheel speed sensor issue. Since VSC gets all it's information from the ABS system, start by pulling the trouble codes. I bet you'll see an ABS code. Read this post
