I have a 92 GMC Safari and it seems as if it is suffocating. I changed the catalytic converter and have now purchased a fuel filter and am going to attempt that. The engine stalls out when first started unless I keep pushing the gas pedal when it starts to die. I had the fuel pump replaced 3 years ago and new spark plugs and spark plug wires installed 2 years ago. I don't know if it could be O2 sensors or what.
Limited backfeed but id try a vacume leak
Testimonial: "Actually after a suggestion I went and bought a new fuel pressure regulator since alot of my problems with the rich fuel code started after that. Turns out the auto parts store gave me the wrong regulator!! It works great now except within a matter of miles my mater cylinder went! :("

maybe your iac valve is not working? it takes place of a choke or temp sender to computer could be bad which controls t I.A.C. known as the idle control valve,do you have any codes?

when you shut the truck off is/was there a swishing/bubbling noise coming from the tank?
Theres an orange rubber in the fuel tank that connects the fuel pump to the sender lines. if that rubber is torn you may get it to run but not stay running for more than a short period of time.

could be the fuel pump ...you will need to do a fuel pressure test on it ..the pressure should be 63 anything lower even so much as a few lbs will cause this to happen ...as well if it sat that long i would consider a complete tune up and check all vacuum lines for dry-rot

Have the fuel pump checked for fuel pressure. Sounds like you got residual pressure but not sufficient running pressure.

Smell of the oil,to see if the fuel injector(spider)is leaking into the crank case,if so,the intake will have to be removed to repair the problem,oh,and change the oil.

Okay, as an update...I changed the fuel filter, changed out some hoses that needed changed, replaced the iac valve, the fuel relay and the magic fix was the fuel pressure regulator. Starts up beautifully now.
Also changed out O2 sensor.
As another note...never threw a code. Only code I got was when I changed out the fuel pressure regulator and on the third test drive (after I had assembled the van back together!) was a code 45 for rich fuel mixture. I walked away to figure out what to do next and the light never came back on. Who knows, but the van is working SSSSOOOOO much better. Thank you all for your help!
Okay, so rich fuel mixture was due to an o ring I apparently left off the fuel pressure regulator, now I have changed the transmission fluid and filter and guess what... hard shifting between first and second. I asked around and was told it had to be the transmission control solenoid. I changed that and now it will not shift out of 1st at all. Backs up fine goes into first fine, but I get it up to 20 and no shift into second. I don't know what I did wrong. Any ideas? Also I noted an extra ring up in the tube where I put the transmission filter. Should I take that out? I think it might be from an old one and didn't know if that might be causing the hard shifting (after some thought as to why I am not shifting at ALL now). Any ideas from anyone? I am tired of sharing a car with my husband!!!
yes take out the old o ring asap ur loosing ur fluids pick up and burning ur clutches every time its runnin
Thankyou!! I did it. I am still having the rich fuel code and I am so frustrated!! I've replaced hoses and gaskets and I just don't know anymore!
