Vehicle has 105K miles on it. Have intermittent problem with automatic tranny not shifting esp when under pressure as in going up steeper elevations. RPMS increase to 2-4 and have to let off gas to decrease. There is also a whining noise when the rpms increase beyond the "norm" for climbing. This problem has just recently started. Someone suggested changing the transmission fluid and filter. If that is the problem, how does one go about that? Is this a task for a novice?
Yes, it's a task for a novice, but don't do a complete flush or you're asking for problems. Just change filter and replace fluid lost with Dexron 6. Before you start throwing parts at it...see this. http://twincharlotte.com/blog/30-common-4l60e-transmission-problems-repair-charlotte-nc/
The transmission fluid filter is the problem. This service should have been done at 80,000 miles. A dirty filter will cause the charge pump whine and loss of charge pump pressure will cause clutch packs to slip. Do not perform this service yourself, Its messy and not for novices. Do not drive or damage to clutch pack friction plates will occur.

Replace the vehicle speed sensor, it's located in the tailhousing of the transfercase
SOURCE: trans not shifting
your transmission has a vacumn modulator on the side it requires vacumn from the engine to shift make sure the vacumn hose from the trans to the engine is plugged on and working, if that is correct then step 2 is the governer which would require a tranny shop to check, but id bet on the vacumn line give it a try! good luck and thankx billy
