Did you ever get that problem diagnosed? My 2008 Jeep GC recently and frequently gets stuck and does not accelerate past 1st gear. We have to pull over put it into park then shift into D-rive again. Then the transmission accelerates prperly. The only way we knew this was the big trucks on my job site have to do the same thing. A temporary resolve. Hoping it's not the transmission slipping and needing repair.

I'm wondering if what you are hearing is the driveshaft universal joints. If they are worn they will 'clunk' every time you put the vehicle in gear. Block all wheels to check, put vehicle in neutral, NOT running, crawl under and move the driveshaft back and forth while watching the front then rear u-joint. It should be obvious if there is 'slop' or 'play' in them, which would indicate they need to be replaced.

Check the Trans fluid level with it running and at operating temperature. Jeep NAG1 transmissions are known to have the input electric seal leak trans fluid. Not an exspensive fix add Mopar ATF4 and then relace the guild seal.

SOURCE: shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

I would check the transmission fluid level and color, should be a nice clear red color. You may need to have the filter replaced. Possibly some internal transmission problem also.

They way you replaced fluid is bad, you should of done a bg service, by dropping the pan theres still oldoil ,the converter is full and the lines and the cooler and inside trany, then when new fluid is added the cleaners in it loosen all the dirt and seend it through the trany, the bg flushes 100% of the old fluid so no mixing of old contiminated and new oil is taking place.

The TCM commads the gear change, there is no valve body brain.
the TCM shifts to second with good inputs to the TCM
if the TCM sees bad inputs it will tell you, SCAN IT.

2004 grand cherkee doesn't shift and then shifts hard. Only happens when turning left. Sometimes rear tire on drivers side squeels when goes into gear. Thanks

You have binding in your drivetrain, Make sure all your tyres are the same size and not work unevenly, You can get friction modifiers that help smoother shifting, also you may want to check your diff oil levels.

Put the vehicle in Park, disconnect the shifter from the shift lever on the trans, adjust the linkage or cable so the connection is clearly a slip in/on connection and tighten things back up. Hopefully this will solve your non-reverse. As for all the gunk and metal shavings, friend, you better have another tranny standing by in your garage when this one stops working completely.

Have a '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4WD, 5.2L, 8 cyl, automatic that's not shifting. Transmission fluid looks good, no burnt smell, no metal bits in fluid, no grinding gears. Won't shift til you...

If the transmission will not go into gear or has trouble finding gears and has the proper amount of fluid, the shifting linkage could be bent or misaligned, especially on automatic models. The linkage can be found on the driver side of the transmission, toward the top of the unit. Inspect it to make sure the components aren't bent or broken and have someone shift the Grand Cherokee while you watch from underneath. Most times, only minor adjustments are necessary.
Also, check Torque Converter and scanned the TCM (Trans Control Module) to know if some fault code is stored there.

What i sthe first sign of the transmission going bad on our 1996 jeep cherokee?

if your trans is slipping when driving or if when you shift from park to reverse or drive it has a delay it doesn't necessarily mean the whole transmission is going. Could be something as simple as low or leaking fluid, a solenoid, a gasket...start with a trans service, if there is excessive metal in the pan, then your trans gears are going and you will need an overhaul or reman trans. Reman is cheaper and has a better warranty than an overhaul--faster too.
