Question about 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
The shifter cable and linkage may be getting sticky. Locate the linkage and cable on the gear selector (transmission side under hood) and spray them with some PB Blaster or WD 40.

I'm having the same problem. the spring in the shifter is not releasing properly. you'll have to replace the whole shifter. to get your keys out in the mean time take off the shifter top and pull up on the plastic piece . it will then lock and you can then take your keys out.

I would reccomend to remove the shifter, and inspect for someone spilling a sticky soft drink, ive seen that alot, and it "Gums up" the Solenoid. i would try cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner availible at any autoparts store. if that doesent take care of it, a trip to your friendly chevrolet dealer for a new shifter will remedy your problem. it stinks, but the only the shift interlock solenoid is serviced, is in the shifter assembly
