I just reciently found oil in my #1 and #4 spark plug holes so I soaked up the oil with towels, replaced valve cover gasket, plugs, wires, and rotor but now the car won't start. I checked for spark through the distributer and when I pulled out a plug, there was gas all over it so I know it is getting fuel. It ran just before the fix but now it doesn't. Autozone and online sources say the spark plug gap is .044 in but the ones I pulled out during the fix were gapped at .04, so I tried gapping at both lengths and still nothing. Can you help?

OK, I feel real stupid. I wrote the cylinder locations down on the distributor cap as a reference, but I did it right to left (in reference to looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle). when I put the new plugs in I did it from left to right so everything was off. I can't say how great it is to get a response with in one hour of my initial posting so thank you Ronnieh49 for giving advise when you think you might be able to help. We need more people who answer questions that they know the answers to. Take care.

In my last comment I said plugs when I meant wires. When I put the new wires on I did it by starting with refering to the right most cylinder as #1 instead of the left most cylinder. I only labeled my distributer and not the wires so I put them on in reverse. That's why you should label everything and not be in a rush.

My 02 galant runs rough when put in gear but in idle runs okay it also surges up and down replaced the plug wires

Okay, lets start with the oil you found on spark plugs when you were replacing them. this oil is coming from the valve cover tube hole area, notice the plugs go into the holes in the valve cover, there is a gasket the goes around the top of the tubes and when it leaks it goes into spark plug hole, the valve cover needs replacing .
this will cause rough idle and running problems, after replacing valve cover gasket the holes must be cleaned, using crab cleaner, spray into holes and use air to blow out . this may need to be done a few times to get oil out .
after oil is removed . then remove spark plugs and wipe them clean.
The next step is to find the air (vacuum leak) , you said you hear it around intake tube. check for cracks or broken vacuum line. this leak will cause idle problems and driving problems,

I have oil on tip of plug wire on only 1 of my spark plugs, all others have a little oil on spark plug itself.I just had the timing belt done ,water pump all sealas and head gasket, new wires do i need to...

You need a new Valve Cover Gasket. The rubber seals around the spark plug holes on the Valve Cover are leaking. A new Valve Cover Gasket will come with the round gaskets that seal the spark plug hole.

There is oil coming from the exterior side of the spark plug wire. (filled up)

The valve cover gasket is supposed to keep the oil in the valve cover. It is leaking out into the spark plug hole where it fills up, soaking the spark plug wire. Have it changed asap.

My Mazda 626 is running rough and has sparks coming from the sides of the spark plug leads also i can hear air coming from the engine bay.

Remove you spark plug leads and see if they are soaked with oil. If so you will have to remove your valve covers and replace the valve cover gaskets. They tend to leak oil into the area of the spark plug holes. You will have to replace the plug wires also. Just replace them one at a time so you will not losthe firing order.Hope this helps. 1. Worn or broken rings on that cylinder
2. Valve guides or seals worn on that cylinder
3. To fix the rings you will have to remove the head and sump (Remove the motor from the car if you cannot remove the sump with it in the car)
4. Yes it will make your car run bad

Changed the spark plugs and the old ones were covered in oil

i'm guessing that your car is a 4-cylinder. this is common for inline 4-cylinder engines. since the spark plug holes usually go through the valve cover, the valve cover gasket will leak and collect in the spark plug holes. to fix this you will have to replace the valve cover gasket.

Sounds like misfire. Change spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor , fuel and air filters. Check for oil in spark plug holes. if oil found change valve cover gasket spark plug orings. they can leak oil into spark plug holes and cause misfire.
