If it is an automatic shift you should have a neutral safety switch between the key switch and the starter. I would check that and for power at the starter when it fails to crank.
If it is a manual shift there is a switch on the clutch pedal or linkage.
It may be tough to find until you can duplicate the problem on demand.
Could also be a dead spot in the starter or solenoid.
Check to see if your security light is flashing if so wait 10 min. turn car on but dont start see if it is still flashing if it is flashing it wont start. I has to stay lit to start...its a security thing

Most of the time this is caused by the anti theft system. It disables the starter and leaves you stuck. This is very common on GM vehicles. Read up on this link for info, pictures, and "do it yourself" solutions to the problem.

put a drop tester across the battery its flat for whatever reason or had its life so try charging it with a trickle chearger for a couple of days and if still no start then renew it

check for a loose or corroded connection on the battery, clean the clamps and pattery posts.
make sure the clamps are securely tightened on the posts and that the wires are not loose or corroded at the clamp. alos check for loose or damaged ground wires coming from the battery or the teminal / clamp

I know it is really strange...But nobody can find out what it is... I get inot my car and turn the key..very slight hum.. It doesn't matter what gear I start it in ( I have tried all of them) Now it won't start more frequently but only once a week..I can't tell you any more details..sorry
