Toyota Celica 2000 GTS hatch won't unlock

I accidentally locked my hatch/rear door while it was open. Now I can't get the latch to unlock. I don't have a remote. How do I get the latch to unlock?

Ed, thanks so much for your response regarding hatchback latch not releasing. I have a 2000 Toyota Celica and I searched everywhere for the answer (including the manual) and found nothing. I even called the dealership and they told me I had to bring it to the shop. No way!!! I'm a do-it-myself chick! I continued to search and found your answer. I put screwdriver into latch...pulled down...and at the same time released the door latch. IT WORKED!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

SOURCE: my prius rear door latch will not function

if you use a phillips screwdriver and put it in the gap where the latch on the hatch holds onto the anchor plate, while pulling down on the screw driver, press or pull the door release. this should release the latch.

Hope this is of some help.

SOURCE: 2001 Toyota Celica GTS Clutch

i paid a friend to do it because it's a lot of work! if you haven't already treid to or got it done just know that when my friend did it; it took him like 8 hours (he'd never done one on a celica, but had done them on american cars) so if your not familiar with it... not a good idea to do alone. I watched him do most, but i'm not the best to talk to about it.(plus i have a 2000GT) Some of the parts that i can remember that he took out to get to the clutch were the front driver's side tire, the axel on the same side, ....some other parts in there....and ALSO parts on top...the intake also had to be taken out just to have enough room to do the job. parts are cheap...just ask for a clutch kit at auto zone or whatever. around $150. another random tid bit that might help is make sure to tighten the engine mounts really good afterwards or else it will jump around in there when you turn it on and cut it off. buy gear oil before you start as well because you will need to put some in after the new clutch is in. i will need to put the car on a real lift... you need a lot of space underneath and on top to work. and most likely two people. well hope some of this helped.

SOURCE: 2003 toyota sequoia rear door latch broken

First, take off the license plate2_bing.gif.
Since the hatch wouldn't open, I started from the inside and took down the top trim piece. After that the two side pieces come down, then the main trim piece which covers the bulk of the door comes out. These are all popped in with the white tabs.
There are 3 access hole covers to pop out (don't forget to install them back in when done) and through the left hole you can see the mechanism to unlatch, press it down with a screwdriver and open the door. If anytime you close the door you will have to do this to unlatch, up until you disconnect the cable and pull out the handle, then you have to locate the cable and pull that directly.
Behind the large trim piece you will find a metal access cover, remove the 7 or 8 10mm bolts holding that on and pop the 3 white tabs and let it hang off to the side. Disconnect the cable from the handle assembly by reaching in from the right hand side and popping of the cable from the handle assembly.
From the left and right access holes, locate the two 10mm nuts which hold the license plate assembly to the door and remove them. Then there are 4 plastic tabs that come in from the outside that hold the license plate assembly on in each corner, try and locate those and using some pliers squeeze them together and push it through. Next locate the license plate lamps wire connector and release that from the left side, it’s the simple push in and pull out square white connector.
After these are out, put back in 1 or 2 bolts into the large metal access cover so the hatch can be lowered (don’t close it).
Here is where I had fun, begin to pop out the assembly that it was bolted to. I ended up breaking 3 of the 4 plastic tabs in each corner because I did not use pliers from the other side to pull them out, however it remained somewhat useable (hindsight 20/20).
Now the license plate assembly can be taken to a bench to replace the handle assembly (Toyota doesn't sell just the handle, it is a small assembly). Two screws out and the assembly is replaced.
Before pressing the license plate assembly back onto the truck, make certain all the plastic tabs are in the assembly and not in the truck. Reverse the process to re-install.

SOURCE: How to instal serpentine belt Toyota celica 2001

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the right hand cover under the engine.
  2. Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve tension on the belt.
  3. Remove the fan and generator V belt.
  4. Return the tensioner to the unloaded position.

NOTE When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly in 3 sec. or more. Be sure not to apply force rapidly. After the tensioner is retracted all the way, do not apply force any more than necessary.

To install:
  1. Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise
  2. Install the belt.
  3. Install the right hand cover under the engine.

How do you open the back door (no manual)

Rear hatch is locked or unlocked with a key. (if equipped) • To open the rear hatch, insert the key into the lock, turn it to the unlock position and pull up the rear hatch by pressing the handle (DOOR). You can also lock/unlock the latch (but not release it) with the central door lock system. • If unlocked, the rear hatch can be opened by pressing the handle (DOOR) and pulling the hatch up. • To close the rear hatch, lower and push down the rear hatch firmly. Make sure that the rear hatch is securely latched.

2000 toyota echo door

It depends on the actual problem. A body shop may be able to use a tool to go down thru the window sill to unlock the latch. If the latch is damaged, you may have to cut into the door to remove it.

2005 GMC BACK HATCH WON'T OPEN

It sounds like the lock actuator has failed or has a poor connection which won't allow the latch to release. What you will need to do is remove the inside rear hatch panel to access the lock actuator. Once you get to the latch use a flat screwdriver to release the latch being careful not to damage the glass.

The latch for the rear hatch got flipped to the lock position while the door was open. Now the hatch will not go down, latch or unlatch.

You need to take something like a pen or something round like that and put it in the latch and pull outwards while you use the door handle to 'open' it. Put the pen where the latch is curled together. If you need to look at one of the doors to see what it looks like open. Good luck!
