When breaking my 2010 ford focus makes a loud knocking noise almost like someone is hitting the underneath of it with a sledge hammer. This happens at speeds of 65mph and higher when braking. It has just started in the past 3 days.

the first thing i will recomend you, is ti buy the new rotors first,
sisnce you did not mention if you allready have the new ones
and see if they are slide out type rotorss or one piece rotor assy
with the lugn nuts, sometimes they just slide out but sometimes you need to remove the center big nut in order to remove them.

You can try the bearings but I think if you take off the rear rotors and look at the emergency brakes you'll find the problem. You might want to ride the emergency brake a little in lieu of removing the rotors to confirm the problem. Also some wheel covers make noise-drive without them and see if it helps.

Sounds to me like a very common problem has occured to your neighbor. If this is a SOHC engine, one of the valve seats in the number 4 cylinder has fallen out. I'm sure it has damaged the head and the piston. Stop trying to run it or you might blow a hole in the cylinder wall or break a rod or both.

look at the otherside, you only do one side at atime.

either the brakes need to be replaced or there is alot of junk built up inside. Either way rear drums need to be taken off, cleaned and shoes inspected for wear.
