I just replaced the resistor in my 2000 grand am se. it did nothing. Last week the 4th setting, the only one that actually still blew air, stopped working. I had my blower replaced a few years ago, and after that was done 1-4 worked, but 5 never did. Every couple months a setting stopped working, starting with 1, 2, 3, and now the 4th and last. only the 4th setting has worked for about 6 months, although it has stopped working once or twice, only to work again after a few minutes. Could it be my wiring or, my blower or something else?

In the manual I have it is shown to be located under the hood at the rear of the compartment on the firewall area where there are several rectangular openings. The block is hidden from view below the wiper module on the lower edge of one of those openings. It has a 5 wire plug on the cabin side of the the opening. If you don't find it, then I know in the 2001 model it was in the cabin, behind the glove box again with the resistors sticking thru the firewall where the air intake would cool them. I just don't know in what year the block was moved between '98 and '01
If you find it in the first location you use a couple of flat blade screwdrivers to release the block and pull it into the engine compartment. On the hidden side push on a spring tang on the driver's side narrow edge of the block and on the comparment side you will see a couple of etched lines on that same side showing where to put the tip of the other screwdriver to pry it forward into the compartment.
Get a replacement block and install making sure the resistors aren't touching one another. If you have trouble removing it I can send you a page that shows what I described above. it sounds like the blower motor went out....its on the passenger side under the hood held in by three screws and a plug. takes about 30 minutes to change it out.

The blower speed controller is located under the hood on the right or passenger side on the heater housing just to the side of the heater hoses near the very back of the right cylinder head.
Yes that would cause the concern you are having.

You can test both of them once you have it apart. I have given you instruction below. Please follow them as injury could result.
REMOVAL
WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.
CAUTION: Stay clear of the blower motor and resistor block (Hot). Do not operate the blower motor with the resistor block removed.
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the glove box from the instrument panel (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE BOX - REMOVAL).
Pull out the lock on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector to unlock the connector latch (Blower Motor Resistor Block- Typical).
Depress the latch on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector and disconnect the connector from the resistor.
Remove the two screws that secure the blower motor resistor block to the HVAC housing.
Remove the resistor block from the HVAC housing.

i have a 2000 grand am se and my blower settings on 1 and 2 never really worked, but recently during a bad winter storm, all settings stopped working.
a mechanic told me to hit the blower w/a hammer, but i refuse. is it just a fuse or does the blower need to be replaced?
