When I turn the air conditioning on there is a noise that sounds like a phlap phlap phlap, really loud. as soon as I turn off the air it stops. seems to really drag the engine's power too. new belts didn't help.
If it is affecting the engine performance, it could be a problem with the compressor.
So the compressor as it starts to fail would drag the engine down?
Yes, if the compressor was failing it could put a heavy load on the engine by way of the serpentine belt.
thats probably why the engine is over loading but what about the noise how would it make a phlap sound in the phlenem chmber i ask for referance on the noise is it inside or outside the cab?

There are several things you should know;
1. Power steering belt, when you make a turn, sometimes make noise, because your car needs power steering oil,=transmission oil.
2. when you turn on AC then you can hear a loud noise, you must check AC compasser,If the head wheel frozen, it will make a lot noise, that you have to fix your AC compasser.
3.check these two first, if both ok. shot some wd40 or lubricate see if it's work.

Believe it or not there are some problems you should take to the dealer. It never was the gear box, its a defective steering column bushing. That problem had a factory notice and the dealer would have diagnosed it immediately an fixed it free parts +$40.install. Tahoes get that problem.

it's too early to tell. i,ve never known a light to come on because of a thermostat.you need to see what code was stored. without knowing,im just guessing. but my first thought was a plugged up catalytic converter. that explains the low power,also fuel filter.

dose it do the same with the heater on? is it insid the cab or outside it could be the phlem flap broken on the blend air motor the flap could be loose and as air passes by it it hits the plenm chamber causing the sound
