Do an oil pressure check at the oil filter. If the pressure is low, replace the oil filter.Remember if you do it yourself before replacing the oil filter pack it with vasoline first. If you don't, the pump will not start pumping.

I appologize... I was talking about the pressure at the oil filter and should have written OIL PUMP TO BE REPLACED

Replace oil filter bypass (the boss that the oil filter screws to)... other than that ..oil pump failing...main bearings out of spec not allowing oil to stay under pressure and reach the upper valve train...good luck

SOURCE: noise engine

This sounds like bad main and connecting rod bearing they are worn and when they become worn they make noise. Because of excessive clearance between bearing oil pressure drops therefore starving the essential parts of the engine of oil. Engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced. God Luck

2az-fe right?
no mileage stated,, is he cam chain making noise, ignored?
get it serviced?
or buy the tools and do the tests DIY.
which choice? only 2.

smoke is a bad sign, on low mileage engines say below 250,000 miles and with noise worst. there must be no noise, on this engine.
no HLA's to rattle there. has solid bucket tappets.
then mean they never make noise unless, its damaged or lacking oil.
are you doing silly SYN oil changes it 25,000 miles or at 5 to 7k miles.?
id do a cylinder leak down test. by hand to protect engine from
further damage, (I do that on all DOHC engines (savvy i am)

How do I stop rattly tappet noise?

Rick you don't say what vehicle it is. I don't believe mixing oils will affect tappet noise unless one of the two oils was way too thin a grade.

If all else is OK, rattly tappets aren't generally a big worry unless you also get hard starting, which indicates the valve timing is way off. I've had vehicles in which valve noise was factory standard LOL.

You could try an oil change with one grade heavier.

The rattle might also indicate that the upper cylinder head is being starved of oil, either due to low pressure, or sludging. You could get oil pressure measured to eliminate that possibility.

After all else if you want to go further you could get the valve lash adjusted, but in some motors it is a helluva job, and in a van, it is more difficult.

1996 Motorguide Brute 765 problems with motor and clicking head coming out from head

sounds like a hydraulic tappet ,try my trick as sometimes it works ,firstly add a 3 good squirts of fairy liquid to engine oil and a half litre of diesel ,has to be fairy and not a cheap brand by the way .Then run engine for a couple of days and the noise will lessen, then change oil and oil filter and use a diesel engine oil suitable for turbo diesel or petrol engines ,cheapest you can buy for this no fancy long life oil ,run engine on this oil diesel oil as it contains detergent and this will dissolve the clag inside the engine and the hydraulic tappet ,change oil 5/6000 miles and by this time it should have lost the noise ,then change oil regular max 6000 miles with a oil filter every third oil change and you shouldnt have any more probl?ems

Golf e mk4 is noisey sounds like tappets, but various mechanics reckon that it is hydraulic cylinder shims? car has done 66k and not been looked after, just had it serviced and still noisey. it needs a...

BAD LIFTERS WILL MAKE A NOISE.IF VALVE LIFTERS AND LOWER SPRING SEALS BEEN REPLACED AND LIFTERS STILL NOISEY.EITHER ENGINE OIL TOO THICK OR ENGINE NEED OIL CHANGE + FILTER CHANGE.DIRTY OIL CAUSE LIFTER NOISE OR OIL PASSAGES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD STOPPED UP NOT ALLOWING LIFTERS TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL.OR OIL PRESSURE TO LOW DUE TO FAULTY OIL PUMP.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 29 PSI @2000 RPM. TRYING ADDING SOME SEAFOAM CLEANER IN CRANK CASE IF OIL PASSAGES STOPPED UP IT WILL CLEAN OUT OIL SLUDGE.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE TELL THEM YOU NEED SEAFOAM.AFTER 500 MILES YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER AGAIN. SEE IF THIS HELP BEFORE SPENDING ALOT OF MONEY .

1998 ford expadition ticking noise ,sound like valve spring broke slightly rough idel loss of power. oil pressure good every thing seems fine.

have your engine valve tappets adjusted to its specified adjustment by a competent mechanic then if the noise is still there then you need to have the engine timing checked. if these doesnt solve the problem then you need to pulldown the cylinder head to inspect the camshaft condition...

Lifter tapping

The tappet noise usually will get louder and louder as it wears. A totally collapsed lifter will definitely be noticeable by loss of power to that cylinder, misfiring, and excessive noise. But then again your current lifter noise could be possibly maintained for years to come by regular and consistent oil changes.

Clicking when engine is ticking over

Most Hyundai's have hydraulic tappets for over head cams, so if its ticking you have a noise tappet. Try changing the oil and in that does not help try an additive to clean the oil gallery's and flush the engine. Also low oil pressure can cause htis fault as well so get it tested if you can.

1995 isuzu Rodeo engine noise

valve guides worn and tappet adjustment required, can check tappet adjustment first to see slightly better before removing heads and getting valve guides repaired/replaced on heads common problem
if raise revs to 1500-2000rpm and hold does clatter come and go come and go (valve guides) if there all the time tappet clearance issue
if there only under load (1st rev up) for a couple of times then stops possible big end bearing
all these are common for this engine
