The engine and transmission in this cars drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPEDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

99' f-150, 5.4 triton V8, 340,000 miles. Runs great unless I drive 15 plus miles and shut off. If I try to start right away, it turns over but won't start. I wait from 10 to 40 minutes until starts.

Could be vapor-lock. When you shut it down fully warm, heat can cause the fuel in the lines to boil, making it hard to start. Low fuel pressure can make the symptoms worse, as full pressure will condense the vapor, and get your fuel flowing.

I would check fuel pressure while running, and again, during the time when it doesn't start.

Vapor locking

What make , model an year vehicle ?Engine size too. Vapor lock is something that was associated with carburetors not fuel injection ! Do you have a check engine light lit on the dash ? How long must it sit before it starts ? Are the cooling fans working ? Sometimes they keep running after engine shuts off , depending on engine temp.

Vapor lock, from my experience, is a pretty rare problem. Unless you have put too much starting fluid in through the air intake. If you have not tried to use starting fluid, you should try to spray some through the airfilter, or the air intake for the motor, while someone is trying to crank it. Do not over-saturate it, or it will cause vapor lock. (vapor lock is all fuel vapors and no air). I have a suspicion that a few squirts of this will get it to fire up. If it starts but then goes out after the starting fluid is burned up, then you may have a problem with the fuel not getting to the engine.

1988 gmc 1500 truck acts like running out of gas will quit running then will start back an do same thing again has plenty of gas in tank

look for vacuum leaks anywhere ..check under cap/coil for wear/dirt on ignition parts replace if dirty/blackened or wet..pull a plug and look for blackened tips or carbon bildup..replace plugs if dirty..is the truck carburerated or tbi..clean with stp carb and tbi cleaner..it will remove built up varnish and gunk in/on the throttle plate and jets..also some filters have a backpressure valve in them to prevent vapor lock in older vehicles that had this issue..if you can blow thru it should work ok..if not needs replaced with type that doent have the valve in it.(has arrow that shows flow direction)..good luck repost findings

Vapor locks

It could be a vapor lock but not likely. Since the introduction of fuel injection vapor lock has been eliminated.
You need to figure out if you are loosing fuel pressure or spark when it will not start back up. Could be a fuel pump relay or ignition module among other things. Even a problem with the vent for the gas tank.

I have a 1999 Dodge Avenger and it only starts when it wants to or something. It turns over like it wants to but it just keeps turning over. i thought it was because i ran out of gas so i changed my fuel...

You may have vapor lock. This would prevent the fuel from getting to the injectors. Try pumping the gas to get the car started. Once started, if the car will stay running, your problem should be cured. If the problem remains, it could be a more serious problem like the PCM (computer). I'm guessing it's vapor lock or otherwise air in the fuel line since the problem started after running out of gas.

1992 toyota celica convertable fails to start after hot

tricky one. not a vapor lock as this typically isn't a problem on fuel injected cars. Maybe the ignition module overheating or could be the fuel pump in the first stages of failure
