How to relace the ignition switch on a 96 crown victoria

The ignition broke on my car and the engine would not turn off, So I pulled the engine fuze and unplugged my battery. After a few months of turning it on and off like that everyday, my car now has no power what so ever.. I am told it needs a new ignition switch, and I need info on how to fix it

It sounds like you need a new Ignition switch. There are a few tricks to changing them, but it is not too hard. You need to remove the plastic cover on the steering column. There is a hole below the Ignition switch that has a spring loaded pin which releases the tumbler.

You will need to disconnect the battery a few times to rotate the key through its Interlock features and be able to remove the Tumbler which can only be released in the RUN or ACC positions. You do not want the battery connected after the key is turned.

The plastic cover can get in the way and often the Tilt wheel may need to be moved to get clearance to remove the switch. Some switches have special heads on the screws which are called Security screws.

The switch is not too expensive and is available at most autoparts stores. You may also find tooling to remove the Security screws at an autoparts store too. The job should take no longer than 1 1/2 hours if even that long, more like 1 hour for most people.

This should solve your problem.

Sounds like the multifunction switch. Try working the hazard switch up and down a few times to see if you get some lights to work. If so then replace the switch.

Hi, the PCM relay does run the injectors, but not the ignition. My guess is your ignition switch is stuck closed. You can try pulling up the relay, but I bet you'll still have power to the coils when you do. See if there is power at fuse #7 with the key off--that is a sure sign your ignition switch is closed in the run position. I don't have an exact procedure for replacing the switch, but your looks like the type that is mounted on the column and actuated by a rod running down from the lock. Take the knee kick panel off and see if you can spot it up there. It's held on by 2 screws.

Engine won't turn off even pulling the key out

Hi, Your ignition might be broken. Happened to me once. You have to unplug the car battery and call a car technique to fix the ignition, or change to a new one.

Drive a hyundai excel 199(AUTO). When i got home once my car engine would not turn off..this happened out of the blues and had no other mechanical problems related to the engine before. I initial figured...

Probably a bad ignition switch, are you positive that it was really changed? The Battery fuse is a seperate factor. You could just unplug the ignition switch wire harness from under the steering wheel.

The left turn light is switched on and is not turning off even though the car is not started yet. It is draining the battery. It is probably short circuited. how should i turn it off? The car is Hyun

To turn it off until it is repaired go to the fuse box under the dash board and pull off the cover. On the back of the cover or on the fuze box itself are the functions of fuzes in the car. Simply pull the fuse for the turn signal...but that does not completely solve your problem, it just saves your battery! You can't drive the vehicle legally without working turn signals! Get it fixed!!!

[email protected] all the fuses and relays in the 2 boxes under the hood and another one of fuses and relays panel inside the car, front of the driver seat, behind the pull out box next to the hood release handle..Under the hood check inside the one with 8" black square box;Check # 1 slot fuse, it is 60 amps for (+B ), check # 8 slot fuse for Engine control 20 amps, check # 15 slot Fuel pump 15 amps..And check another skinny black box lie next to that box, it has relay F, that is Engine control, check that also...And inside the car fuses panel; Check # 1 slot fuse 10 amps that for Ignition coil, # 8 slot Engine control 7.5 amps, # 12 slot Engine control 7.5 amps..After that recheck the battery post, that maybe needed re-tight..Don't force to tight too much, that will crack and broke the post and the plastic battery body...And check all the ignition wires and spark plugs that are tight or needed to replace..And check all the vacuum lines that are loose and leaks suctions or sometimes they are crack open by long ages..By the way check and recheck all those other fuses and relay for make sure they are good...Believe me that not hard to figure out those problems..You did everything rights so far..That one 100 amps fuse at the + battery post cable was connect to alternator for recharging your battery and give power to other items when car was running..Below that post, the middle cable was connect to the starter motor and the bottom cable was connect to that 8" black fuses and relays box under the hood...

Wire from computer to battery broke. We fixed the wire. Now the car starts then revs up and down then dies.

ECU has forgotten Throttle Position.

Turn ignition to KOEO for 30 may hear throttle clicking fro a few seconds.

Turn ignition completely off . Now start engine...idle should be 800rpm and steady.

If not the Throttle Adaption needs setting ( or your throttle body is dirty of faulty....unlikely if it was OK before.)

Ignition troubles

unplug connector at ignition switch, bridge terminal 30 [battery power] on connector and terminal 50 power to starter solenoid. engine should turn over. plastic ignition switch can wear and not make contact. at times the lug on ignition barrel that turns the switch breaks off.

I have a dodge caliper 56 place fitted new engine and battrey been disconnected for a few mounths waiting for engine but now it wont turn over on the key and head lights come on wehn i turn the ingtion on

You need a new battery, when I had my car off the road for a few months and didnt use my battery it died from not getting charged by the accelorator. That is my answer. Hope is works.

Do you have an alarm on this? If you do, that is most likely the problem. There seems to be a problem with the alarms. You may want to have a new key made just in case. Sometimes the keys are magnetically charged and after time, it wears off.

Jetta won't start


I had the same problem when i replaced my battery.
1: unplug the battery
2: put key in ignition and turn to Aux Mode (that is the last click befor you turn the car on) Not all the way as if your turning the car on! Do not remove key! leave it in the ignition.
3. Hook up the battery and it will reset the computer. (wait for a few seconds)
4. Turn car on!
