Lacks power under load & starts hard cold. fuel pressure is 50 psi. what should it be?

sounds to me like a bad fuel pressure regulator. I would replace that and see what happens, if that fails you may have contaminated fuel

Yes... you are most likely low on freon as the compressor will cut on low pressure before vacuum.Depending on ambient temps and head pressures your running ,you may see low side pressures at 50. Automotive refrigerant (134a) is not far from matching the degress to low pressure....for instance 50 lb low side pressure will give you approx 60 degrees cooling at the vent.Once cabin temperatures are met is when you can expect that suction pressure to lower and stabilize. You would be better off watching high and low pressures to get the full picture of whats going on here...good luck

Check your coil output, buy a cheep spark tester. Pull of a spark plug wire and plug in the tester(ground the other end), set it to bridge a gap for 30,000 volts.Have someone start it and make sure the spark will jump the gap on the tester.Danger-Very high voltage! It will light you up if your touching the tester while the car is running! You'll be able to see a bright blue spark(and hear it as well) if your coil is good.If it's a yellow thin spark it's probably the coil.
If you have good spark, check the fuel filter and fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
Back firing could be timing, cam position or crank position sensor.Worst case scenario, timing chain or belt.

Sounds to me like fuel delivery issue. If i am correct this engine has the injector unit inside the intake manifold. When the engine needs the extra fuel for accel or loads it just isnt there. You are going to have to do a fuel drop test to determie if the correct amount of fuel is being released for the amount of time the injector is open.
