SOURCE: i cant lift the cap lid. i cant figure out how to

If this is an electric release for the petrol flap then there is normally a manual/emergency overide in the boot - maybe a small cable pull? Only a guess as I do not know this particular car only going by what is often fitted on other makes! hope this helps-good luck.

SOURCE: 1998 jaguar xj8 consumes anti-freeze

First thing to check is the radiator cap seal. If it is not sealing properly, the water will boil off and then soon, the anti freeze will begin to disappear. Clean the metal surfaces and gasket and make sure it is tight ---or buy a new cap --but make sure there is a seal. If that doesn't cure it, you may have a head gasket leak that blows the coolant (anti freeze) into one cylinder. If that cylinder is tight, the coolant will only evaporate in the heat and be blown out the exhaust --not entering the oil pan. Check your exhaust when you start up. You may see white smoke, or even liquid, exiting the exhaust pipe, indicating a blown head gasket (then engine may run rough, too). If this is the case, there are reasonably inexpensive cures for this in some cases.

Ashtray door is stuck closed

Try to use a good quality "Foam Cleaner" - don't use too much - ; it might be due to dust or dirt. Leave if for a few minutes, and then tap gently on the ashtray cover. Repeat the process if needed, then wipe clean. This may solve the problem, as I had a similar case two days back but with the ashtray of one of the rear doors on my 1999 XJ8.. and this solved it.. also I used same trick to make the top of the ashtray compartment in the center console opens more freely.

You will need to have the car towed to a Jaguar dealer to fix it.

When should the timing chain be replaced on a 2001 XJ8?

As most timing chains, when they start to get noisy, that is usually when they start to stretch beyond there limits, refer to owners/service manual for any periodic maintenance.

My Jag XJ8 has a rubber bung next to the filler and I am unsure if it is the drain or vent, please can anyone help as the filler keeps filling with water..! Many thanks...G

yes it's the drain pull on it and then blow air and water to it to uncloge it... it has 3 small holes on the cap...just pull it...it won brake...also once removed you might use a piece of solid wire...like the once hangers are made of....hope it helps..

Boot lid will not open except by use of key

Removed lock solenoid actuator and tested off vehicle, cleaned up terminals and pulled some fuses and relays cleaning wherever I thought necessary, also cleaned locking rod at filler cap with maintenance spray and lubricated mechanism inside boot underneath filler area. Both items now working but still not sure what the cause was.Suspect dirty terminals but these were not readily apparent
