I am replacing the factory 7 pin trailer plug on my Ram, and am looking for the factory schematic so I can rewire my factory harness to a new 7 pin receptacle. Thanks!

All you need is a cheap continuity tester, any one to help tap on the brakes..7pin is just like the 4 pin w/extra power wire for acc.lites, electric brakes.when you buy the 7pin rec.,comes w/wiring schematic standard to all trailer rec.- you can do it..kev-mn.

When wiring a trailer connector, it is best to wire by function, as wire colors can vary. We have an excellent wiring diagram on our website, I will provide you a link so you can look at it.

If you are looking at the inside of the trailer connector where the wires mount to the terminals starting at the notch at the top and working clockwise:

1:00 is Black and 12 volt power
3:00 is Green and Right Turn and Brake
5:00 is Blue and Brake Controller
7:00 is White and Ground
9:00 is Yellow and Left Turn and Brake
11:00 is Brown and Tail and Running Lights
Center is Purple and is Optional Reverse

I recommend using a circuit tester like part # 40376 to verify your connections.

What is the function of the 8 wires for the factory rv plug?

The 8 wire plug on newer models is for trailer hauling. The wires give power to the following; break lights, marker lights, backup lights (as equipped) parking lights, electric breaks (larger trailers will have these) one wire is a ground, and, through a positive wire, will trickle charge your trailers house batteries also. There is an industry standard to wiring one of these plugs, so you should be able to purchase any "newer" style trailer (tent, tow behind or 5th wheel, or camper) and the wiring harness will be wired accordingly. Any RV shop or auto shop should be able to provide a schematic for the wiring if you require one.

I do not have power on the aux. terminal in the trailer plug on a 2008 dodge ram. Any ideas?

You have got 7 pin trailer connector that was included in the optional trailer tow package. This trailer tow package also includes an electric trailer brake wiring provision that terminates at a connector located on top of the large body harness connection under the instrument panel to the left of the break pedal, as well as an electric trailer brake pigtail harness and an instruction card that are stored in the glove box when the vehicle is shipped from the factory. You will need to add an electric brake controller of your choice that will plug-in to the harness and that will also give you power on your auxiliary circuit.

Factory 99 dodge trailer plug wiring

You'll need to disconnect the wires from either the truck connector or the trailer connector...
I highly suggest purchasing a voltage checker- it looks like a screwdriver with a pigtail of wire with an alligator clip on the end. The tip of the 'screwdriver' has a point for probing. The light in the probe will light up...makes it easy to trouble shoot without a helper behind the trailer.
Hook the aligator clip to a good positive grounding point on the bumper or frame(not painted).
then pin by pin on the truck connection, stick the probe on each terminal tab.. and write a simple diagram where you find brake, tail, backup, etc...
Then i'd suggest, taking the connector off of your trailer, exposing the wire ends.
Run again thru your diagram and turn on each light of the truck. As you do, touch the wires from the trailer to that specific terminal. (make sure your ground wire is attached on the trailer) you can mark each wire with a piece of tape and label it which is which.
then simply attach your trailer wires according to your diagram to the terminals in the connector... that should get you in business..
hope that makes sense...
That way if the factory wiring harness remains the same, you'll be able to use it with other trailers if the need arises..

Wiring diagram

If you are going from a 4 pin on your trailer to the 7 pin on the truck. You need to go to parts store or a department store (ex Wal Mart) and look in trailer section and find the adapter. Thats what I did. Also Remember if your lights don't work on trailer, check the plug to make sure its tight or check the fuse under your drivers side rear seat for that fuse box.
