I have a 95 audi a90 and its extremely hardto steer when the vehicleis at an idle position it seems as if its easier when its in motion. Now i have heard from a few people it could either e the power steering or possible the steering rack and i was wondering if there was a way i could find out without bringingit to a mechanic.
Its very rare for the rack to give up.iv come across this problem b4.if 1 ov the power steering pipes is getting hot then it has collapsed inside.if not that it cud b the pump it self.

Yes the coil pack is a common problem But you should take the car to a place like Auto Zone where they will read the fault codes to see why the check engine light came on. Then you'll have a better idea of what the problem is. It will tell you which cyl. is causing the missing.
The control valves from the power steering unit lock in position at extreme angles. Either the fluid is dirty - replace it - or the unit is worn out - valves can be replaced separately and the unit refurbished. Or just buy a new unit.
It could be as simple as replacing an idle air valve, or could be something electronic. Really needs to be hooked up to a machine to be properly diagnosed.
When you turn the steering wheel do you notice the RPM increase?
