SOURCE: speedometer doesn't work and transmission wont shift

Hi, make sure you check the speed cable that runs to the engine, it may be severed. As for the tranny, you have some major gear problems that will require pulling this transmission for a deeper look. i would have a look at the transmission filter as well.

SOURCE: Honda Accord EX 94 vss has been replaced, but still nothing work

If all the connection and power supplies to instrument cluster are ok,I suspect that the speedometer or instrument cluster is faulty but before you replace it, make sure the gear inside the transmission that drives the VSS is in good.

At 170,000 the odometer got stuck &I reset the trip meter & after 9 miles it stopped completely. I tried resetting but NO luck. What can I do???

If the speedometer still works, you'll probably have to replace the cluster. Chances are a gear broke inside the odometer.

How can i fix the speedometer for my car Honda accord 96 model

This model year Honda Accord had a lot of issues with the speedometer head itself.
As a new or rebuilt speedometer is rather expensive I have been replacing these with one from an auto recycler/wrecking yard.
Get the whole instrument panel as it is a lot easier, just a matter of removing the defective unit and installing the replacement assembly.
There is a possibility that the speed sensor may be defective but that will generally turn on the check engine light.

Speedometer works erratically 1996 Honda accord LX

this is not a cable driven speedo - so the problem lies in the gearing inside the gauge cluster itself.
You will need to have it repaired or replaced.

You have to remove the instrument panel to replace bulbs, or to check the connectors. The procedure is:
If you have a tilt steering wheel, put it all the way down.
Remove the two screws at the top of the bezel, the pull the bezel outward to disengage the clips at the bottom (use something like a taped screwdriver so you won’t cause damage to the surrounding area).
Once the bezel is out, remove the instrument cluster screws and pull the cluster out and unplug the electrical connectors (there are three of them).
You can then check the bulbs and the connectors themselves, maybe clean the connectors up a bit, or replace bulbs, but sometimes it’s a matter of replacing the whole unit (not advisable to try to get inside it), sorry.
Hope this helps you a bit.

96 Accord VSS or Speedometer Head?

The "needle at 20MPH" is a sure-fire indicator -- it's the speedometer head. This is a common problem in this year.

I haven't found a fix other than replacing the speedometer head, sorry.

Speedometer not working

Does it hang out at 18-20MPH, regardless of your speed?
Mine did the same thing. The problem was an open circuit inside the gauge itself, and there's no repair for the parts. You'll need to get a replacement speedometer gauge, or simply buy a replacement instrument cluster.

If it's not doing the "20mph" thing, then it's possible that you just need a new engine speed sensor. This is located on the rear of the engine block, and is hard but not impossible to reach and replace.

One way to test is to set the car on cruise control when the speedometer is working. If the speedometer cuts out ,but the cruise is still able to maintain your speed, then the sensor is OK and the problem is the gauge. If the cruise control also cuts out, then the sensor is bad.

1996 Honda Accord Speedometer

You, of coarse, have to remove the Instrument panel. There are I bellieve 3 or 4 screws to remove it. All the meters in the Intrument panel are connected electrically by the screws to the PC board. Do you have a replacement one or do you still have to purchase one? I can tell you step by step how to get the dash apart if you want. I had to do this many time with my car. I have a 96 Honda Accord EX. When you have a car like I do with about 200,000 miles on it, I get a lot of practice replacing just about everything inside the vehicle.
