The first thing to do is have someone hook up a diagnostic scanner to check the codes. Some auto parts stores will do this for free, or you could purchase a basic scanner and do it yourself. Once you have the codes you'll have a better idea of what repairs need to be performed. Unfortunately without more info, it's hard to tell why the light is on. Hope this helps.

The selector drive mtor mounted on the transfer case had alot of problems with water getting into the circuit board and also the mtoro drive getting stuck. At the dealership I have replaced hundreds of these over the years.
Well it could be the selector switch, but I doubt it. Generally, the service light means something is not working that the computer controls. Solenoids and valves are a couple of possibilities. The transfer case is shifted by solenoids commanded by the body computer based on the switch position on the dash. You should be able to have a shop scan the body computer for trouble codes and proceed from there. A basic code reader may not access the body computer.
If you go to an auto parts srore like Advanced Auto etc. Ask them to check your codes first just to make sure you don't have a problem, then ask them to reset it. They do it for free. Hope this helps
